A couple of questions for the Epic 'Vets' out there:

1.  Owner's manual suggests replacing fuel filter and transmission fluid & filter every season, at least.  Does everyone do that?  Do you do it at the start of the season (eliminate any moisture that condensed during the off season) or at the end of the season?  What type of filters, and where best to get them?  No mention in the manual of fluid type to use or quantity.  I noticed Discount Inboard Marine (DIM) has a filter for Hurth Transmissions, but not sure if they are all the same, or not. Any advice on how best to drain crankcase/transmission?   Didn't see anything about fuel filters for Toyota there, either, and the manual doesn't show any pictures/provide any part numbers, etc.
2. Throttle, steering and shift cable lubrication:  Same question--start or end of season?  Any tips on grease/grease guns to use?

3.  Any advice on what spare parts/tools to keep on board?

Thanks in advance for any advice, pictures.  By the way, I just ordered my spare impeller.

Hey Pete,
The fuel filter is a canister style filter element mounted on the front right of your engine compartment. The element is an MF-11, it also crosses to a Mercruiser part number, I'd have to look it up again to get the cross reference. It would probably be a good idea to get the number for the how_to page. It is a stock item at West Marine.
As for the transmission filter element, it is basically a metal screen. You can clean it easily, I don't think it is really necessary to replace it. To change the oil (Dexron III GM Auto Trans fluid, '99 owners manual p. 5-4 :)) use one of those vacuum cans that you pump up and suck the fluid out.  Don't be shocked if you see metal particles in the oil, it's normal for break in, your boat is barely broken in. I think I remember that it takes around three quarts, maybe a little more. I know I have a couple of quarts left and I probably bought five. I am going to change mine soon and I'll take pics and post them.

Thanks for the information!  Glad to hear the transmission is pretty straight forward.   Do you always clean the trans and change fuel filters at the beginning of the season?

Based on your comment and the part number ou provided in the 'how to' item for the impeller change, I think I'm going to get a spare sepentine belt.  Anything else I should have on the water 'just in case'?

A set of metric combination wrenches, a jump start box, a multimeter (cheap one) a piece of wire to clean out the speedometer pitot, a pair of swim goggles for WHEN you wrap a rope around the prop, a pair of vice grips, one of those combination screwdrivers, a beer opener, an extra plug(water, not spark), some wire ties, hose clamps, some duct and electrical tape. Fuses for your aftermarket stereo accessories, Toyota uses breakers for boat stuff.
A lighter, a box cutter, that should do it. A spare prop and removal kit is nice but you have to pull the boat out to put it on.

I use a gallon milk jug filled with concrete for an anchor, sometimes two. The lake I use has lots of dead trees on the bottom, and I don't generally anchor overnight. If I get snagged, I take off and the handle rips off the milk jug, I at least keep my anchor rope. I only need an anchor to keep me stationary while jamming out and drinking beer, no current or anything. Mud anchors work well too, but I have lost them along with three or four others every year.

Anyone:

How many quarts of oil does the VT300i engine use?  Didn't see anything in the owner's manual that says how much, only what kind.

Thanks.

I think it's right around five quarts. It uses synthetic, and Mobil One comes in those handy six quart cases. I have a couple sitting around for topping off, though that is not really necessary with these motors, they don't use oil much.

Thanks.  That's what I needed.  I bought 10 quarts of Castrol Syntec 5w-30 on sale yesterday.  Out to work out well for beginning and end of season changes.

They should be able to deliver quicker than that. I don't have a lot of faith in Rick Cohn's knowledge or competence.
