Overheating/Water pump?
« on: July 04, 2004, 17:27:59 pm »
Yesterday I was driving my 99 Epic 22 and it overheated - first problem I ever had with the boat.  We put it on the lift, checked the intake grate (clear), the water filter (clear), checked the thermostat (opens and closes fine), and the water hoses (clear, no leaks).  I put the boat back in the water, took the hose off the thermostat housing that comes from the water pump output side, and started it up - no water coming from the water pump at all.  If I pull the boat out of the water and pour water down this hose, it runs backwards thru the intake system and comes out the grate, so there are no blocks in the water lines.

Have to assume this means a bad water pump (serpentine belt is fine).  Is this a marine specific part or will a Lexus car water pump work?  Does anyone have a phone number for Toyota parts or tech help? I heard they were gonna stock parts for ten years.

One odd thing: the bolts that hold the water pump on have the paint chipped off, like they had been removed and replaced after the engine was painted.  I bought the boat new, and the only time it has been out of my sight was for that "complimentary upgrade" (silent recall) thing a few years ago.

Welcome to the board!

It sounds like your water pump's impeller is hosed. Follow the links on the Epicmarine page to How-To and you'll see Pete's write-up on how to change it out. You might go out there today to pull it and make sure it's hosed.

These impellers should be change annually - $25 is cheap insurance against overheating.

I've got them before from Skidim.com, but see that West Marine carries them as well.

Hey thanks! I looked at the how-to and that's gotta be the problem.  I will order a couple of new impellers tuesday.  Looks like an easy job - /12 hour?

Yep, it's easy. Don't do it in the water, though, unless you plug the inlet hose!

OK, it's all fixed with an impeller from SkiDIM. Piece of cake.

By the way, when to boat starts to overheat, a warning beeper goes off on the dash.  This beeper most likely saved me the cost of a new engine.

cool. If you still have the old impeller, take a pic for us please.

As far as temp warnings, there's also an overtemp sensor in the v-drive units. Pretty cool.

Going over the new boat with a fine tooth comb and discover !! the top, starboard, inward facing bolt on the water pump is missing.  So I guess it's held on with 2 of 3 bolts and the tensioner via the serpentine belt....

I need to know what thread size of the missing bolt is.  Went to the local hardware store and got M8 and M10 bolts - the only two larger metric bolts they had.  The M8 slides right in without engaging anything.  The M10 slides in, engages, but binds up after about 1 turn.  Is it possibly an M10-1.25 !!  The bolt hole appears to be about 1" deep.  If anyone can tell me the thread size, I can order one from the Bolt Warehouse - otherwise I'm running without the pump actually connected - which will probably work fine but I really hate to do it.

You are correct. It is 10x1.25, almost every bolt on the engine is a 1.25 thread pitch. The only exception I can think of is the crank bolt which is 1.50 thread pitch. DO NOT bottom the bolt out in the hole! I've seen other technicians do this and it either taps through the rest of the block and into a water or oil passage or most common-cracks the block.

Yeah - I was looking at the casting thinking the exact same thing - thread that puppy in too far and you'll have a real big problem.

Which kind of got me wondering why it was missing in the first place - surely the folks at Marine-Products didn't just forget to put it in...?  And there's no missing bolt sitting under the manifolds that I can find.  I guess time will tell.
