ELECTRICAL NIGHTMARE
« on: July 06, 2004, 02:15:59 am »
I PLUGGED A 12V VACUUM CLEANER INTO THE POWER PORT NEAREST THE IGNITION PANEL.  PARKED; STEREO ON; AS SOON AS I PLUGGED IT IN THE STEREO STOPPED.
NOW I HAVE A DEAD PANEL; NO BLOWER, NO NAV, NO PRE-START HORN NUUUTHINNNNG. I HAVE NO IDEA.
I HAVE CHECKED POWER FROM THE BATTERY, TO THE SHUTOFF, TO THE RELAYS AND MASTER BREAKERS AT THE BACK OF THE ENGINE. (I HAVE 13V TO THE EFI RELAY NO POWER FORWARD OF THAT POINT)
HELP, AM I IN TROUBLE

Have you tried cutting battery power to force the accessory computer into reset? There's a link on the How-To page to a pdf describing MDC troubleshooting.

Did you check all the breakers? There's the ones under the dash, but also maybe some others on the engine?

I had a problem where I lost the ground to my ignition module. Mine was modified by Atlanta Marine to have the pushbutton ignition (mercruiser) like on a Nautique. I ran another ground wire to a buss that I put under the dash, everything works. The reason I mention this is because your boat is from the same dealership as mine.

I'll send you a private message, I'm actually at home today and could help real time.

So, I was tubing the kids around the lake yesterday, hit a wake a little hard and the engine, stereo and a few other things just shut off. It was obvious that something electrical had happened. I got under the dash and found that one of the leads to the ignition switch had come off. Plugged it back in and went on our way. I wonder if you might have a similar problem since you plugged in next to the key switch. It sounds like you lost power to the same things I lost power to.

By the way y'all, I was at Willard Bay here in Utah yesterday on the holiday. It is a 10,000 acre lake. We arrived at about 2:00 and there were quite a few boats out. by 3:00 the place had pretty much been evacuated and we spent the rest of the day with one other boat and pure glass water. 10,000 acres of boarding for 6 hours and zero interference from anyone else on a holiday. It doesn't get any better than that.

This may be a little unrelated, but my ballast fill and empty pumps were not working last weekend.  I noticed that the 15A fuses were blown, but when I replaced them they simply blew out again.  Yesterday, I checked all the connections and noticed that the ground from the ballast system buss was hardly making contact.  After a solid ground was made everything works great.

( RICK E-MAILED ME LAST NIGHT 'THANKS RICK'. THERE IS AN INLINE FUSE ATTACHED TO THE  MAIN SHUTOFF, 6" FROM THE SHUTOFF THAT IS NOT VISIBLE FROM THE TOP ON MY BOAT. I REPLACED IT AND IT WORKS NOW. HAPPY HAPPY MAN

I have heard but I haven't found there is a fuse in the harness near the battery switch.  I also heard that you should check the fuse for corrosion that may cause voltage drops and erratic gauges. Is this the fuse of which you speak?

The inline fuse should be a 40 amp fuse - see my comments in the dashboard thread.

I need to track down a spare to have on hand.
