Wake surfing enhancements
« on: March 31, 2012, 20:24:20 pm »
Has anyone attached a plate or hydrofoil for enhanced wakes?  I'm considering a product called the "switchblade" which is a rudder with a horizontal fin.  It's science reportedly optimizes the prop wash and has a positive effect on the wake equivalent to 1200lbs ballast.  Another less expensive modification is the installation of large aluminum plates.  I've have already tried multiple combinations of ballast and still disappointed in comparison to my best surfing behind a Mastercraft X-2.  while hearing another Toyota epic owner say the shape of the aft section (regardless of swim deck) spoils any ballast attempts.  Instead of selling the epic in search of larger waves, are there any custom modifications anyone has heard of?

That switchblade is like a knockoff of the malibu wedge but it swivels for easier turning. It does not retract all the way up though.  I'm not sure that design would work on the back of our boats. Not to sound negative but you will never get the wake of a Malibu Wakesetter or Supra SSV. The surf wake is "ok" but if you really want to surf a lot, find a friend with a 247 ;)

Great input.  We should be looking for an acceptable entry point.  I've never experienced the wave of a 247 and I know you're right, it's huge and impossible.  However, if someone had to guts to add a hydrofoil modification to a Toyota Epic, it might be an excellent wave at a fraction of cost.  In other words, this seems worthwhile.

I am curious if you ever went with the switchblade.   I am a little less wake boarder these days and a little more surfer.
