Found a 99 21' closed bow and need advice
« on: May 12, 2012, 15:43:33 pm »
Came a cross a 99 in good shape and just trying to get comfortable with the idea of an Epic and servicing.  It sounds like you guys do a great job helping each other but what happens when and if she starts acting weird. They have an obscure motor that would be difficult to troubleshoot with out the proper equipment right? doesn't sound like you can take her to the local Toyota or Lexus dealer either.  I called around and nobody knew they made boats.  Including a buddy at Southeast Toyota so I'm a little hesitant.

I'm a Toyota fan and thought that it may be a good investment as a Toyota boat but The HiN is a S0E, not TMM.  Was this because the mold was not the property of TMM yet?  I'm told it was a reproduction demo.  Does this help or hurt values long term?

They are asking 13k.  seems a little high for a second owner, 400+ hours.   The teak is rough and the bunks need to be replaced on the trailer. All in all though considering its age she's in good shape.  The owner did drop her in the salt a few times but no real evidence except at the prop shaft seal since the boat has no anodes.

Are props and drive parts readily available?  Any concerns to look for?

Any thoughts?  What should I look for when examining this boat?  NADA shows it worth about 11k and they seemed to be selling for around 11,500 on this forum.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Is it safe to assume that all boats from 99 were corrected or replaced from the recall regarding the twist?

all "chine lock" boats were replaced and hull's destroyed. parts are really a hot topic right now. Ive personally owned two epics in the last 8 years and Ive never "needed" a factory part. i did upgrade my SX with a fresh water cooling system but i don't consider that a repair. the engines are extremely reliable , if it does have problems its almost always a fouled spark plug or dirty MAF sensor ( yes you can clean the sensor). but like any boat things break and if you need to hook up a scan tool your gonna have to rent it from rick or hope your near an old dealer. most things can be diagnosed by symptoms alone, but every now and then its gonna be tricky. i work for Lexus and our factory scan tool does not work on the boat. Ive never had to use one. knock on wood. i tend to just foul plugs, i run a lot of weight at 22 mph and it fouls plugs.

props and drive parts haven't been an issue. a lot of us have acme's, there awesome.

there not for everybody but many of us wouldn't own another boat. it helps if you are at least a little mechanically minded. even with there downfalls epics tend to hold their value well. if your buying in prime season your probably gonna pay likewise. some of us have gotten screaming deals, my first e22 and then i paid top dollar for my mint SX 3 years later
OVER 800 HRS ON 2 EPICS.
99 E22- Sold 2007
01 SX - Sold 2013
2014 Axis A22-Sold 2018
