bilge pump for s22
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:19:16 am »
I broke off the nozle on my bilge pump trying to clean the strainer and need to replace it. Is this the correct one?

http://www.amazon.com/Rule-25S-Automatic-500-GPH-12-Volt/dp/B000O8B7R8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341792687&sr=8-1&keywords=rule+25s+marine+rule+500+automatic+marine+bilge+pump+500-gph

i think it is, but a read a comment that says this in NOT an auto pump.

Amazon should correct the inaccurate description of this item which states "......STARTS WORKING WHEN THE WATER LEVEL PUSHES THE FLOAT UP." As several other posters have noted, this pump DOES NOT have, or utilize, a FLOAT switch. Instead, it starts up every few minutes and it automatically measures resistance on the impeller shaft for a few seconds to determine whether it should continue to run. If there is water in the bilge, the shaft resistance causes the pump to continue to run until the bilge water is removed and no resistance is noted. The electrical drain during the resistance testing phase is minimal. This is an good product and will last 1-2 years in continuous operation. The only down side is that as the pump gets older, it could malfunction and run continuously in the absence of any water in the bilge. Two batteries -wired independently- are a must in any boat that has a working automatic bilge pump installed.

So, the question is...is this the same one as the factory??? there is no float in the one i took off, but I don;t remember it coming on every few minutes ...

That's the one I used when I replaced mine.

If you want one without the float (installed it then took it out when I decided to get one with the float, I have one I can send you (I'll have to check the hose size and will let you know).

Thanks Brad, I think i'll stick with the auto one. So you are saying that you installed the 25s and it has a float?

Yes, the 25s has a float so I normally turn on the accessory switch "Bilge" and keep it on full time.   When the water raises the float the pump turns on.

Les, the one that comes from the factory just turns on every few minutes...and it will stay on until it senses no load on the impeller motor. For some reason the guys on the internet freak out on that concept. I think it's great, would just like a second one aft, or maybe go with a 1100 gph instead. Seems the key is to have a pump that'll cover for me when I finally forget the drain plug on launching :-)

Derek:  As one of my winter project I installed an aft bilge (more central I guess considering I placed it just in front of the engine on my SX). I basically spliced the wiring into the existing bilge electrical so the factory bilge and additional bilge work off the same switch.  My experience this summer is it works great and gives me extra peace of mind.  When I'm loaded for wake surfing, the water can collect in the far aft and doesn't reach the additional bilge so if the goal is to keep the water at a minimum then placement further aft would do the trick (just not sure where to place it given the long run for the vent on port side for the additional bilge I placed to match the starboard side).  It's also rather cramped with the steering and exhaust items that are aft.

I got the 25s and it has 3 wires in the harness coming from the pump. The one i took out has 2 wires, which makes me think the switch is not a 3 way switch, rather ..just on-auto/off

When i think about it, All i need is "auto" and "off". what am i missing??

Lesman:

I left the brown with white stripe out (not connected).  Connect the brown solid (lead) and black (ground) to your connectors and you should be good to go.
