2001 Epic SX - Fresh water cooling??
« on: July 11, 2012, 21:38:39 pm »
Hi Guys,

I read a couple threads on heat exchangers, but does anyone have any info on what type of heat exchanger I could purchase and install to do a fresh water cooling loop? I am looking at using on lake and in the ocean.  Also, what do I need to do to install a shower?

Cheers,

ktdust

My X-22 has a Monitor Products heat exchanger, so I'd get in touch with them. My boat is fresh water use only, but it sure makes winterization easy not to have to drain the block.

Take a look at TBS 19 under the maintenance section for the shower install requirements.

I installed the Fresh Water Cooling system (purchased from Capt Rick) a few years back.  I did a modification (inserted T-connector on the hot lake water side of the exchanger) so I could still keep the shower (the water temp in shower is warm instead hot like it used to be).

Toyota Marine Part - Heat Exchanger MEH0011109

same as

Monitor Products Part - M5278-4156

When I did my modification, I called Monitor Products.  They were very helpful.

I followed brad's lead and installed one also. haven't tried his mod to get warm water to the shower, but i honestly don't use it so its not a priority for me. when i did my install i tried to tap in to the drain/ anode plug on the exchanger with no luck water wasn't even warm. technically they say you cant have both, but thanks to Brad we can at least get something out of it.

it does make winterizing much easier. another thing i noticed and liked the most was it helped stabilize the cooling system temps and my running temps dropped a little.

id get one while you can. rick told me i got the last one in 2007 and when they recently updated parts availability there were still 3 or 4 in stock........ i would check with monitor first they designed it so i sure they can supply a full kit. maybe even cheaper than the $900 i spent. install is a little fun, it doesn't go together quite like the bulletin said. one of the large ports on the exchanger had been moved since they printed the instructions. not hard just plan on a trip or two to the parts store to get hoses that work.
