All Gauges Dead
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:38:37 am »
Not sure if any of this is related or it was just time for this issue to happen.  I bought my 99 Epic21 with 229 hrs and now it has 290 hrs.  I am the guy who only wants my boat to pull my arms off when I start slalom skiing (and it does).  Speed is really not important to me and so I spend very little time doing over 25-27 mph.  Gauges all usually work well except for the usual speedo problems.  Today I broke with the norm and had smooth water and really pushed it up to 45 mph, at least that is what my inaccurate speedo gauge said. After about 4-5 minutes at speed the gauges went crazy :P and all gauges dropped to what looked like the boat was "off".  No alarms, no drop in performance of the boat and not unusually hard bumps.  I am OK with no speedo but very uncomfortable without the other gauges.  All right....where do I start? Is this that pesky ground problem because I am going to have a lot of "How to" and "Where is that questions"? ;D

Just a thought,  the added pressure on the speedo tubes might have ruptured the seal on the MMDC and let water into the computer.  Remove tubes from MMDC and see if water runs out.  If so time for a new one, we remove our factory speedos and replace them with simple analog speedos.  This stops the water from entering the MMDC.  Good luck.

I agree with water sports. Put in Perfect Pass and be done with the factory speedos.

Water Sports, thanks for a starting point.  I pulled the flexible hoses off the Prim. and Sec. Medallion MDC1600 (hope that is what meant).  No water came out. Pushed them back on and turned the key and still not working.  Like I said, no so worried about speedo but really need the other gauges.  Next step???

Unplug the two connections on Mdc, then inspect connector, plug in,  turn key on does any gauges move and zero? Remove and send to Rick Cohn Toyota Marine 10200 Newington drive Orlando Fl 32836 $70 to test if you buy or need a new one nc for testing.

Thanks Capt Rick.  I went thru the steps that you suggested and no luck.  The gauges sounded like they were trying to zero but would not.  I unscrewed the MDC1600 and shook it...should it sound like it has a lot of water in it ???

Time for a new mdc, then replace your speedos.

Thanks all for the advice.  New MDC1600 did the trick....gauges are alive once again;D  Will not be hooking up the speedos back up to it!

3" analog speedo is only $40, glad everything worked out.  Enjoy the rest of the summer.  24mph at 3000rpm approx.
