Chine lock when i turn left !!!
« on: July 22, 2004, 03:45:46 am »
Does anyone know about this ? i have a 2000 S22 Vdrive .this has been a problem since new . when i make a hard left turn its super hard on the return to center position .im worried that someone is going to get hurt or loose control of the boat .i have heard about the hull problems with the 21 footers .and im thinking this might be the case here .there are not anymore toyota marine techs in northern calif anymore .so i called rick cohen and  he thinks this is  normal .(i sure dont think so) i have cked the rudder and everything is normal   .anyone have some thoughts or some info on this ? toyota said it will give us 10 years of support on these boats ...and its not happening ...........thanks

As far as support goes, he did talk to you about it, right? And both Rick, Jeff and Bill have done good with several of us on this board.

Chine lock must be scary, but I admit that I don't know what it is. Wish I did, cuz I've got a 2000 S22 like you and might be able to help.

Besides being much easier to turn in one direction (I assume due to the propwash), the only bad behavior I've seen is a sort of dead band in the steering at high speeds. It's occasional and usually linked to rollers, but scary nonetheless.

I hadn't heard that about Jeff. He's my rep, and Cal's too. I do know he's usually friggin busy.

Wouldn't the SX and S22 have come out of the same molds? If so, there'd be a stack of v-drives owners with it. If not, either it's a design problem affecting us all or it's unique to yours.

Either way, you need to come down to LoCal and drive mine ;-) Just for testing purposes, of course.

Mine does chine lock also. But it's not that bad, and it's nothing Toyota-specific.   I would guess that most inboard boats chine lock at some time. For me, it usually happens when my boat is loaded heavily and weight is SLIGHTLY off center (it doesn't take much).  Passengers get mad at me and call me a weight-nazi, but really, they don't realize that once the chine locks, you have to really drive the wheel the other way or slow the boat down to get rid of it.

If this is what you're experiencing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's just normal with inboards if the weight isn't centered perfectly.  Chine locking is just the weight being off center and confusing the boat about where the center is, if that makes sense...?

And I'm pissed if that's true about Jeff. I'm calling him tomorrow. We can't be at armageddon already...

I have found similar behavior in my Epic 22 with heavy loading and weight slightly off center. It is not a problem unless you can't recover from a turn. I have found that if I cut speed the attitude of the boat changes and I can turn normally. It turns differently in one direction because of prop rotation. This is normal inboard behavior.

That's what happened to my boat, causing it to hit the dam at our lake(ref. pics in steering problems post).Pretty scary to see your family in front of you hitting the rocks while you're in the water!
