Check Engine Light?
« on: September 30, 2013, 23:56:31 pm »
Question: does the emergency light supposed to be lit when running? I'm suspicious since I can barely see it but it's on but barely visible. I only saw it because I was in the boat this evening when the light was low and noticed the glow. If there is a problem, isn't supposed to be bright?

the light should be bright when illuminated. a lot of them look like they are on even when they are not. Cup it with your hand to make sure it is on and if so check your digital display for an error message. My guess is that it isn't on, but appears illuminated due to sun, light transference etc.

+1 on the reflection making it look turned on.  Also the light should be illuminated with the ignition on before the engine is started.  Once it is started it should turn off.

Re: Re-Check Warning Light

Hi!

And thanks for the responses! I did check the light by cupping my hand and it is still dimly lit. There is no sun reflecting to give a false reading. The boat runs well but I was advised by a Toyota mechanic that I may want to rest the computer. A poor man's way to do that is to remove the battery cables and touch them together. That did discharge the stored juice to reset the computer but the light is still lit but dim.

I am thinking there is something going on but if there was the light should be much brighter. Perhaps the light stays on to indicate that the engine is running or that the warning system is on real time?

Any thoughts on that?

Avidx,

I honestly don't think there is a problem. When the light comes on it is bright. No mistaking it. A lot of the codes that illuminate the light also trigger the audible alarm and you will now when it happens. Could also be that the lens is illuminated by another light in the control cluster (borrowed light).

You could always buy or rent a scan tool and pull the code to find out for sure. Search scan tool on the forum for how to get one. Not a solution but hope it helps.
