X22
« on: August 09, 2004, 23:40:40 pm »
I looked at a 1999 X22 this weekend with 480 hours on it. The whole family apparently wakeboards (five kids & dad) so it has been used many long hours. Boat looks a little rough around the edges (upholstry worn, mirror mount chewed-up winshield frame, few scrapes) but hull apprears in good shape. Anyone have experience with Toyota with this amount of hours? Anything I should look for or be aware of?

Just kind of realized this, but with the Epic, what you see is what you get. If you run it and it doesn't vibrate, or miss, or alarm, you're probably set for another couple thousand hours (mechanically). The original engine fluids could still be in there and it's probably like new inside. The hull and all hidden structure will be rock solid forever. So, we get back to how the cosmetics are. If you're comfy with a clearly used boat's looks, go for it.

Have you spent time in an Epic? Have you read around in the various, "I'm looking at a used _____ what do you guys think?" threads? Most of us will say is an amazing boat, but there are some issues you'll want to get up to speed on.

Personally, I paid 'full' price for a used boat three states away simply because it was like new. Don't find many perfect boats out there, but it looks like there have been a few over the past year.

Finally, because of the resale value risks, you want to make sure you're REALLY happy with the thing.

Once again, I gave an opinion about something you didn't ask about (you'll see that's SOP for me).

WELCOME!!!!

One other thing I'm going to add to Derek's comments.  If you can, make sure you find another Toyota to compare it to. The vinyl work in them is much different than any other boat out there, and even when it's in perfect condition, the wider stitching takes some getting used to.  The quality is excellent (much thicker vinyl than any other boat I've been in), it just takes some squinting to get used to.

So I'd want to know what you mean by "worn".  And other than that, these things are bullet-proof...if it runs well, is a price you feel is a good deal, and the interior is acceptable, then go for it.

By the way, I couldn't believe how white my vinyl got when I went over the whole thing with some vinyl cleaner and a stiff-bristled brush. The thing went from (what I thought was a UV-faded) slightly off-white color to **gleaming white** in about 3 hours.  I was amazed at the difference. Don't know if that's even what you're referring to, but... might be worth taking a brush and some cleaner next time you look at it!

And I'll second the welcome!!

Cal, maybe this should be in another thread, but I wanna hear more about your vinyl cleaning. It is really hard to get the stuff clean without using Simple Green (and I hear that stuff's bad so I won't use it except to spot clean).

The chewed up mirror mount is pretty normal.  I would like to hear about the vinyl cleaning sounds interesting.....  let's start another thread on what exactly you used.

Pics coming soon!

Most Toyotas are well used. That should tell you something. I have 551 hours on mine, I'm on my third oil change. I've changed my impeller once, my fuel filter twice, and my plugs once. I got in a pissing contest once with a wanker on Wankboarder.com about maintenance costs, I calculated that  I still have 24.55 years left @ 100 hrs per year before I need a rebuild, based on the useage at The Wakeboard Camp, which ran weighted Toyotas exclusively for many years. Try that with a chevy or ford pushrod motor.

Mint is nice, but do you want a car nobody wanted to drive or a guitar that sucked so hard nobody wanted to play it?

That being said, I would be interested in any mint SX's that come up for sale!!. Even a well used one.
