Driveshaft maintenance
« on: August 06, 2015, 02:05:04 am »
What maintenance does anyone do on the driveshaft  and prop strut and has anyone had issues with this part. Don't hear much about this on the forum, also, I thinks it's been about 5 years or more since I repacked the shaft log but does not leak. I just turn it a bit to tighten every now and then and it's good.

Wondered about that bushing as well. Haven't touched it. Thought you've got to drop the shaft to change it.

Packing lasts and lasts.

Noticed my driveshaft coupling is leaking last night. Almost a drop a second. What is the best way to tighten it? When I looked, I saw a cotter pin through both nuts. Which confused me, because if I hold the back one and tighten the front one, the holes won't line up anymore. Do you guys have the cotter pin installed? Removing it scares me a little, but if you guys have been driving around without it, I'll get the warm and fuzzies to fix it.

There are a number of holes, so yes, pull the cotter pin and tighten the coupling. No drops while sitting still, one every few seconds when in gear at idle. If you can't crank it tight enough, you gotta rellace the packing. See 'shaf5 repacking from the source' doc on this site.

Where you at, calisoca?

I repacked my shaft seal last week, its not hard even on a vdrive. Mine won't drip at all barely does even when running. I left it loose and still no drips.
