Deck thickness, Epic 22
« on: August 12, 2004, 03:26:17 am »
Here is a pic of the chunks of hull from a couple of places I've drilled holes in my Epic 22. The small ones are 1" holes I drilled for speaker wire under the forward tower mounts. The hull was .75 in. thick, plus a glassed in .25 in. aluminum support plate. The larger one is the hull on the driver side just in front of the trunk where I put a 1.125 thru hull for my ballast drain.

Hey Cyclone,  Only two boats ever built to these specs.  Toyota set its sights (and safety Standards) on the other local FLA manufacturer Correct Craft.  They both survived the 15 foot freefall onto concrete and a hydraulic ram pressing on the side of the hull at about 15000 LBS.  You should have seen the MC and Mali.  One of the recalled E21's was sent back to TMO to be completely destroyed (that's all their legal department would allow) .  The guys decided to have a little fun and see how this motor which also happens to be FAA approved for small planes would hold up with no oil or water.  They started it, pinned it at 6000+ RPMs and waited.  It's designed to cool itself with gasoline in the absence of oil and never did fail due to lack of lubrication... the exhaust melted shut and stalled the engine after a little over half an hour.

Cal, to be accurate, it means that we have a TMS insider here AGAIN. The prior is MIA.

Sorry for being cryptic, but he asked not to be revealed. I don't have any contact info for him and haven't heard from him in a year. He lives out here by me, but still works for the Firm and is probably afraid of making waves there. Keep hoping he comes back; I could listen to TMS campfire stories all friggin night. And, at some point, one of these guys is gonna have the missing link of info we need for something.

No problem!  Anonymity works for me, it it keeps us in touch with a Toyota insider.

I agree with you about the insider stories.  They are cool.

That story about running the engine without oil seems unbelievable, but I remember seeing a video of someone running an RX-7 rotary engine wwith a blown rotor at 9000 rpm for 7+ mins before it blew, and then I start thinking maybe the 1UZ could..

I still don't get how gasoline can do anything to help crank bearings, cam bearings, etc.  Lubing the cylinder walls is one thing, but I don't get the rest.  I'm not a mechanical automotive engineer either.

And why did they blow it up anyway?  It pained me to watch those guys in that video kill that beat up rotary--how could the guys that helped create one of these beauties kill it?  (I'd have bid  for it on Ebay and kept it in my garage as a 'spare') !
