What should I do next?
« on: June 09, 2016, 18:26:58 pm »
After 2 years of working on the 2000 X22 Epic I bought at auction (fell off the trailer), it is finally completely finished with all bodywork, paint, etc. and engine is running like a champ. What other items, besides winterize items, should I do prior to launching it? I'm new to the ski boat/direct drive world as I've only have a pontoon with a volvo I/O.

What should you do next? Take pics and post them here! :)

Something to consider: Toyota recommends the timing belt be changed every 10 years... It's not too bad of a job and the parts are reasonably priced at RockAuto. The timing belt I removed looked like new, however its better to be safe than sorry.

Your exhaust hoses may also be ready for replacement... Many members have found they start to delaminate internally as the boats get older. I replaced mine last year and they were still in OK shape, but starting to bubble and peel a bit inside.

I just did my timing belt.  same thing looked new.  need an impact wrench though to get the crank bolt off.  also taking the pylon off was a pain.  my next project are exhaust hoses and packing.  still don't know how to redo the packing without taking out the whole shaft.  or even just get the first washer out

Packing is not difficult (although I made it so by trying the wrong size material). There's a ppt about it in the docs section.

Thanks for the information; here is the only pick I took so far. I'll take some more when I go work on it later today.

-Replace those stock speakers so you have music on the water! When I bought my boat, the speakers looked just like yours. Yellowed with black stains coming out the bottom.

-If you don't have an automatic bilge, I highly recommend installing a float switch. The prop shaft packings are known to leak, so for peace of mind, it's worth the money. Got my Attwood switch off Amazon for $20.

Gel coat/paint job looks sick! I like the all white. Post some more pictures when you get a chance.

Your boat looks like it is in great shape! Just needs a little cleaning and it will be good to go! I suggest "Totally Awesome" and a brush for cleaning the vinyl, and them apply some 303 Aerospace protectant on there.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of the all white hull!

I do the TA and 303 routine a couple times of year... It's amazing how clean the TA gets the white vinyl!

Thanks...I've been scrubbing away with some heavy duty magic eraser and the dirt is coming out nicely. I'll search for TA to see if a local marine store has it. I'm not sure if it has an automatic bilge pump but I'll check amazon since it won't be on a lift this year.

Be careful with the magic eraser... It can scuff the top layer of the vinyl off.

The best part about TA (Totally Awesome) is its cheap and available at dollar stores... It's about $1 a bottle here. I can't remember exactly, but I think I cut it about 2 or 3 parts water to 1 part TA.

I swear by Folex cleaner for vinyl. Read up on it a second. Avail at Home Depot, super super not harsh on vinyl or stitching, works great.

Recommendation for what's next?...
1. Optima Bule Top battery
2. ACME 525 prop
3. Head unit with BT and Aux In
4. Powered 12" sub in lieu of driver's feet kick panel

Now will go back and look at your setup...

I did not know that about magic eraser. I'll make sure to let everyone know not to use that stuff and will look at Folex as well.

Random question. Where would I look on the shaft to see if it 1" or 1" 1/8" for a 2000 X22?

Answered my own question after going over the parts page. Found a Acme 525 prop for 225 but it's 1 1/8".  Oh well.

My bad! 525 may be both wring shaft size and the wrong pitch based on your tranny ratios. Don't know what the equivalent 'all around' prop is for the X.
