Electronics
« on: September 14, 2004, 18:57:09 pm »
I posted a couple of weeks ago and I bought that 1999 EpicX-22 I was looking at. Well maintained but needs some TLC. I am not electronically orientated and have a question. When I turn on blower or horn if the radio is on it goes out for 3-4 seconds then comes back on. I have only had the boat a couple of days so I have not checked to see if it loses power or reception. Any thoughts appreciated.

Also wondering if any one else has a tower problem like this. When I lower my tower in to place it rubs on the windshield frame scraping it. The bad thing is you have to lift the tower to get the cover on  and it gets chewed up! The other side has a good gap and the cover slides in easily. Is there anything to do short of cutting a 2 inch piece off? Thanks for the input

Hey W8,
The problem with the pushbuttons is normal. There is a fix for it, strapping a diode across the terminals of the relay  box under the dash. When the relays switch 12vdc to a coil like a horn or a bilge pump, a magnetic field develops. When switched off, the collapsing field causes a voltage spike that causes the state of the relays in the box to flip flop. I just live with it, can't be bothered! Tell you what, I will do the mod on my boat and take some pics for you guys. It's no big deal.

As for the tower issues, the site (world!) expert on Epic Tower anomalies would be Derek (Gr8dna) who will chime in............

that could explain a strange thing that has happened to me a couple times...

My gauges totally go out, replace the ECU, and nothing still.  Then I fumble around with the switches a bit(turning things on and off) and......POOF!  The gauges are fully functional again!

The DECC box (mounted directly underneath the dash) controls the 12vdc coming straight from the battery. Here is an exerpt from the doc I posted on the How To page. It mentions that if the diode fix doesn't fix it, then replace the DECC. It is made by Electro-Motion industries. There is an 800 number, you could probably get yours fixed or at least get one cheaper than from Toyota.
