Oil type and weight
« on: September 18, 2004, 04:51:05 am »
Aloha everyone,
I would like to know what type and weight of engine oil everyone uses, and would a full synthetic oil be ok? The temp. out here is usually between 75 to 90 degres F. year round. I'm gonna change the oil, and would like to find out the best one to use.
Also, if the oil level is too low, and a sharp turn is made, would that put the engine into "knock-protect" mode until after the turn is completed, and the oil settles back? This seemed to be the case for me last week.
Thanks for your help in advance!
Aloha,
Tim ???

Aloha, Aviator

5w30 full synthetic after the first oil change at 200 hrs. I use Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter for a 2000 Lexus LS400. It's the same filter for all Lexus motors.

Wierd stuff definitely will happen with too much or not enough oil. The cams are advanced and retarded based on load, if there was too much advance you would get some detonation and go into knock protect.

Chicoepic says that he fouls a certain plug more frequently when he runs his oil level high, plug fouling is not common but not unusual.

Your engine will take about 5.6 qts, with filter.

It must be so nice right now where you are! It's not bad in Ga. but it ain't Hawaii.

Tim, don't remember if you've got a d-drive or a v-drive. If you've got the SX/S22, follow Cyclone's advice on oil/filter. If you've got the d-drive, look first and seee if there's a little room arounf the current filter. If there is, get a Mobil 1 M1-301 filter: it's off the older Toys and some of the current domestics. Maybe twice the volume and twice the filter media for te same price. It's what I use exclusively in the Sequoia, but it won't fit on my S22 (the small filter barely fits).
