Sayin HELLO!
« on: September 27, 2004, 03:47:52 am »
Greetings. I just stumbled across this Epic forum..I think i linked from wakeboardatlanta.com. Very Cool....I own a 2000 Epic S22. Bought it from Atlanta Marine liquidators in 2002. Added a Monster Tower and take it to Hartwell, or Lanier during the week when I can blow off work for the afternoon. Love to hook up with other Epic owners.

I love my Epic. Have had no problems other than blowing out a trailer wheel bearing..Ouch..(Those bearings are one of a kind, BTW.) what fun repackin bearings in the grass!...after drivin to some bearing manufacturer plant to get replacements in south Atlanta... Now i have a 5 gallon grease gun and stop every 20 miles to give each wheel a squirt. JK.

Been wondering about a balist system and would be curious to get some ideas. I thought of buying 2 Fat sacks ( the long skinny ones), and putting them beside the engine compartment....

Anyway, now I'm gonna go read every post I feel like I'm home...

Hey, great to have you on the board! I'm also in Atlanta, and I post stuff on wakeboardtatlanta.com quite a bit. I also bought my boat from Atlanta Marine, they are a first rate dealership.

I'm out on Lanier all the time, I have a blue Epic22 with the factory tower and trampoline top.

There are several posts on ballasts. Also see the home page for links to the howto page, documentation, etc. www.epicmarine.com

welcome fellow s22'er.
Regarding ballast...
I purchased fatties for my S22 this summer, the guys at Marine Products rec. a 400# in the rear storage compartment and a 300# in the bow.  It seemed to work great, of course a boatload of friends is priceless.  Now I'm sounding sappy.  I think, after reading how much weight some other epic owners are using, I may get some lead for the bow to go under the seats and move the 400# to one side of the transom and add another to the other side.  So that'd be like 1400# total, plus fuel and humans.
I'm sure you'd agree these boats are more weight sensitive than a pregnant woman, so placing people in the right spots is pretty important.
good to have you aboard.

Welcome to the board! It's always good to see v-drives show up here, especially ones with such enlightened color schemes as yours :-) A pair of new S22s...it's turngin out to be a good week already!

I remember how it felt when Pete's site showed up on Google. So cool to have, and I hope we eventually host the whole Epic community.

I agree that our v-drives are sensitive to fore/aft weight distribution, but do believe they come out of balance from the factory. I think that each S22/SX needs 200 pounds in the very nose (permanently) to fix the stock out-of-trim condition. After that's done, they might be a little more normal in terms of sensitivity to bow rise, porpoising, etc.

As far as side-to-side sensitivity goes, you should go ride on a peaky-wake boat like the SAN. Keeping those wakes clean on both sides is like a balancing act compared to ours.

Can't get a pic up cuz I'm on NT here, friggin Paint won't launch (couldn't make jpegs anyway), PhotoEd won't run cuz of NT, Quiktime viewer won't allow me to edit....

Oh yeah, ballast: 700 pound Big Bump in trunk and second Big Bump in walkway as far forward as possible. They're friggin huge, and were super cheap around Christmas time last year (gethighsports.net). Only one other bag will fill the trunk better, and that's the $200 Fluid Concepts 1000-pounder. I don't use the covers, and fill both fully. Site says 700 to 750, so maybe we've got 1500 in there, not sure. Then again, I'm not happy with the hole shot with this much weight when we've got a bigger crew. Takes a good stick, too when you've got her loaded up (enter Perfect Pass).

Coolio, Thanks for the info...and the welcome... The 200lbs permenantly in the front seems like a great idea.  I guess I'll have to buy wakeboard racks to free up the truck for a Big Bump. Dang, this forum is already costing me  ;D

The other grand dealio is to fill the v-drive compartments with custom sacks. I will do this someday (no really, Cal, I am more than just a dreamer - swear). The port compartment needs a bulkhead installed similar to the one on the starboard side, and they both may need to be reinforced a little, but... with bags sized at 36x30x30 filling the compartments, there'd be about 2300 pounds back there. A lot of weight, but it's much closer to the center of gravity than in the trunk. The bow would still need a nice chunk of weight. With a semiauto ballast system driving the aft bags and the right prop, I think that will be the final gr8dna configuration. That wake would be sick, and probably about as tall as my son :-)
