carpet replacement
« on: March 16, 2022, 23:51:07 pm »
Anyone do this yet? They are ripping out carpet and putting in patterned engraved rubber flooring on a lot of boats from the carpet era. It's a lot of work and materials aren't inexpensive but it looks fantastic. Anyone do this to their Epic yet??

I'd be really tempted to do gelcoat with mats approach but a significant amount of the floor in our boats is either aluminum or a starboard like material so the rubber sounds like a better approach. That said I don't mind the carpet on a hot day as I can still walk on it. I wonder if the rubber stays cool.

What'd you guys decide? We just pulled trigger on new vinyl and while in there, chatted about it. The bow walkway could totally go pad. The aft cabin though would be a mess to replace with either carpet or pad because carpet is sandwiched between hull top and liner/bottom. I keep thinking foam up front then a custom pice of carpet (removable) to lay over old carpet. Fun fact, he said don't replace it because we have like house carpet and the marine carpet today ain't awesome. I dunno yet if he had other motives.

This has been something I've wondered about as well.  Typically my aft carpet (VDrive) gets wet on a typical boating day, then takes a couple of days to dry out.  Thought about pulling the carpet and spraying a rhino lining?

Wow, so Rhino line then snap-in carpet on top?

Also interested in new flooring. Just purchased a 1999 Epic X22 and was thinking about installing something besides carpet.

Bump.

Has anyone removed the carpet from their Epic?
If so, what is underneath?
Is it nice gel coat?
Or rough, painted fiberglass?

I removed the carpet up in the bow area and it was nice, clean, gel coat underneath so the foam/rubber pad adheres well, but i'm unsure what lies beneath the rest of the carpet and would like to know what i'm getting into before I start ripping into it.

It's probably black gel coated, we are only talking about the perimeter around the metal panels, You can reach through the hole in the bottom of your seat base and feel the surface under the carpet.
