Reformulated Gas
« on: October 02, 2004, 00:41:58 am »
I just got our boat about a month ago.  The guy who sold it to me said to avoid reformulated gas, which is the stuff that the EPA requires in Milwaukee county.  So, I've got to drive a couple of counties away, just to get the kind of gas that is sold in most of the U.S.

So far, I've only had to gas up once since we've returned to the Milwaukee area (gotta love the Epic's mileage).  In fact, as I was driving to an RFG-free county to buy gas for the boat, I noticed a lot of boats on trailers.  As soon as I crossed the county line into the RFG-free county, I pulled off to get gas at the first gas station.  There were three other boats getting gassed up at the same time!  It was kind of funny... everyone was buying the contraband pure-gas!  (Kinda reminded me of buying Coors out west and bringing it back to the Midwest 20 years ago.)

I asked the gas station manager about the gas and she said that she sold "good old all-american gas, not the reformulated stuff sold an exit down the highway."

Do any of you live in RFG areas?  (For a list of areas click on:
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/rfg/whereyoulive.htm )

If so, do you use RFG or do you drive to a RFG-free area to buy gas.  The EPA says that there are two types of RFG: Ethanol (Toyota Marine says to stay away from alcohol in gasoline) and MBTE (which I'm not sure what Toyota Marine thinks about).  Is anyone familiar with MBTE?  I think that's what they use in the Milwaukee/Chicago corridor during the summer months.

For now, I think I'll follow the advice of the prior owner and drive to get pure-gas, particularly since I don't want to mess up the engine!

No idea, dude... I didn't even know there was such a thing as reformulated gas until I read this thread just now.   I think your hunch is probably correct. I wouldn't touch that stuff if there is a way to avoid it.

My advice: drop the coin and buy a gas buddy.  Take it with you whenever you fill the boat. That way you have extra gas always on supply... and only have to make about half the trips.
