Gear ratio on a x22
« on: July 14, 2025, 13:55:00 pm »
Hello,

My mechanic is saying my transmission is going out and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know the gear ratio for a 2001 x22?

Thanks

Capt Rick

1.21   it is on the tag .

Tell me what it is doing. They last forever

Does the prop shaft turn in neutral?
does the noise go away over 1200 rpm.

Does it go in drive and reverse/
Is the fluid clear or milky
is the fluid leaking in bilge.

It felt like it was dropping out of gear while traveling at cruising speed, and then it seemed like it wasn't grabbing or the prop was slipping, so we limped back to the marina.  When I tried pulling up to the marina dock, it wouldn't drop out of drive to neutral to reverse, so I had a rather scary docking experience where throttling in reverse made it go forward.

It's taken a few weeks to get the ball rolling on getting this fixed, so I may go down and start checking / troubleshooting some of this myself. I'll let you know what the transmission fluid looks like next time I'm down there.

I think the shifter cable or the side control came loose.
1st look at transmission  then remove cable and manually shift transmission.

Hey Rick,

The mechanic working on it says they tried manually adjusting the throttle, and the clutch was likely faulty, as it wouldn't engage/disengage very well.  But they said it was probably cheaper to replace the whole thing than try to rebuild it.  They are saying the part is difficult to get from their distributor, and they can't work on this until October.  They are quoting me at least 4000 to replace it.

I should say that the very first time I got this boat, the alternator died, and I was stranded in a rocky area for 45 minutes until I could get a tow. I think it may have damaged the drive shaft and cutlass bearing, which I both replaced early last year. Therefore, it is possible that the gearbox was also damaged during all of this.

I loved this boat, but I went ahead and upgraded to a newer / bigger boat, so I will likely sell this Epic X22 as is with the gear issues until I can fix it this fall.
