Looking to upgrade stereo
« on: November 25, 2004, 20:16:14 pm »
Hi all,

Great forum.

I am looking to upgrade the stereo that came with my 2000 Epic 22 direct drive (no tower).  I'd like to keep the same deck and existing speakers but add some bass (not a ton - but something you can feel when you crank it up).   However, I'd like to keep the boat looking as stock as possible.  So, I was thinking of a bass tube or something along those lines.... just not sure where to put it.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Dan

I put a sealed 10" sub enclosure in front of the drivers feet, cut a hole in the panel. Works great. You could put a bass tube up there and not cut anything.

Do you know if there room up there for a bass tube?  Our heater is located there... so I'd guess it would be pretty tight.  I'd go take a look but our boat is over at our river property.  Also, would you recommend going with an amplified tube or get a separate amp??

Thanks!

Dan

I think there would be room there but you should take the panel off and look. A heater definitely takes up most of that space. I guess it all depends how big the tube is.

Depending on what crevice you're trying to stuff (baud-a-baup), you might check out the Infinity powere box. It's rectangular and they woked real hard to keep bass response good while shrinking the enclosure as small as possible. I've never heard one, but you might want to check it out.

Two more places where I've put bass tubes:  I was able to shove on up in the dry storage....  kinda up to the left as you look in.  Also, I have an observers' seat behind the drivers' seat....  between the two there is a perfect little space for a bass tube.  One more thing-  you HAVE to get a seperate amp.  There are alot of reasons, which I won't bore you with.

We also have an epic direct drive with plenty of bass tower speakers and the whole deal. We have a ten inch sub and two amps stored directly under the glove box in that small locker. It works great when you crank up hotel california you can really feel it.

I have the heater as well.  Nothing will fit in front of the driver's feet.  My recommendation:

Do an amp and seperate sub -- a 10" sub is all you'll need (and all that will fit in that compartment). Use rubber feet on the door and electrical tape on the cupholders and you won't have any rattles.

Sucks to lose all your storage, though. I'll bet a creative stereo guy could put a sub somewhere inobtrusive, like maybe in the storage compartment. I put my amps on a panel that I mounted on the right side of the compartment that goes from the top to the bottom of the compartment. A 12" free air sub would probably fit right in there, and take up no space.  Ditto on the rattleproofing of that compartment door and the cupholders.

I don't have any experience with free air subwoofers, my sub is a cheap 10" one in a sealed enclosure. It is loud enough.

I use that compartment a lot and put my extra battery in there and all my amps and stuff without losing one square inch of storage. There is room if you are creative.
