Withdrawals ended.
« on: January 21, 2005, 21:58:12 pm »
I dunno who fixed it, but thanks for getting the site up again. I'm in Utah, its winter, and since we don't drink, smoke or carouse in this State, the only fix I ever get is checkin the Epic forum. Thanks whoever you are, and thanks to Pete for settin the darn (thats a Utah word) thing up in the first place.

thanks for fixing it up.  Without the support of these threads, I found myself looking on e-bay for used malibus and whatever else is out there.  Not that I am not a loyal toyota-ist, with 2 toyota vehiculars and all, but it's ok for the eyes to wander, isn't it?
Too bad Kia isn't into the marine business, we could get 10 year warranties on our vessels.

You'd need the 10-year warranties, too :-)

When I was in Korea last year, I learned what giants Hyundai and LG were. I'd heard of LG in radio ads (home theater and cell phones), and have know for a long time that Hyundai is far bigger than just a car maker. However, those two companies probably build half of the durable goods found in Korea. Elevators, main battle tanks, etc.

Never could find a Toyota there or Honda. A few Benz's and Bimmers. Even saw a Dodge Caravan. You'd think they're all set on buying Korean.

Went to the Korean district in Garden Grove (here) and saw that there were a tone of Yotas and Hondas. Guess they really all drive Kias and Hyundais and others because the gov't taxes the crap out of imports. When the trade restrictions are removced....they buy Japanese like the rest of us ;-)

so, there are some pretty strong feelings out there regarding other manufacturers.  Thanks for explaining the wild and fancy (in a sort-of-homo-way) logos and decals to me.  I won't admit to being able to crack that code.
I have no intention of jumping ship on the Shizzle that is "the" Epic.
I have put about 100 hours on my S22 in the 18 months that I have had it, not one single problem of any significance, unless you  consider me leaving the ignition on and draining the battery a manufacturer defect.  If they were still in the biz, I'd be a lifetime owner.   But let's face it, every one of us will eventually own a more expensive, lesser quality boat with a flaming decal on the side.  Inevitability.

Festivus, you're probably right.  But my inevitable is a Tige 24V, to answer if it's okay for the eyes to wander...mine certainly do.  But my what-little-I-have-upstairs kicks in when my friend with his 22V complains to me about the 10-12 gph he burns when he goes out for a board/surf session -- then starts asking questions about my Epic.

It reminds me that until the day mine sinks, blows up, or falls apart...the Epic is the shizzle.  Even after that day, it will still be the shizzle.  And though our boats will inevitably depreciate faster than a fat kid can say cupcake, those who take good care might get a rare treat in owning a boat that everybody else will (someday) admire.

I may be dreaming...but that's how I see it.

Cal, that strikes my as one of the more profound posts I've read in quite a while. Pete said he'll do whatever to keep Lesman in an Epic, and I'll go on record saying I'll do what I can to keep you in your beautiful white/black X22. Seattle Epics, represent!

10 to 12 gph, that's just sick.

If I were to pick one boat right now I'd take if my S22 burned/sank/got buried in a mudslide, it'd probably be the SAN, simply because it's pretty high quality, a little racey, and throws a really fun wake. Downside (besides price) is the small cockpit.

Above all, I'd love to buy a blank hull and fit my own engine into it. It'd just happen to be a intercooled, supercharged Toyota 1UZ.

If I really wanted to get crazy, I'd look into a hybrid setup where you have batteries or caps that augment a small gas engine while getting on plane. Basically, think of a little 2 liter VVT-i 4-cylinder that peaks at like 140 hp. The prop is turned by a motor, and the motor is powered by batteries and/or caps. The batteries are charged by the gas engine. You let the engine idle until the batteries are charged enough for the hole shot, then you gun it. By the time you get up on plane, they're pretty well depleted. However, the little four-banger delivers plenty of power for cruise and is also able to deliver a little excess to recharge the battery bank. Once the battery's recharged, the engine throttles back and you cruise around at some ungodly low fuel burn. Rider falls, the cycle repeats. Worst case, your rider falls while getting up and you've got to wait a little bit for the system to recharge. That all assumes a heavily-ballasted hull, cuz I'm pretty sure that a good 4-cylinder would easily get one of our boats on plane empty without any help from the batteries.

And a wet hull. With wet gunnels. And snap-in carpet. And integrated Windows Media Player, DVD player, GPS, and optically-guided tower-mounted DV cam that serves as rear-view mirror AND ride recorder.
