Yep, it's the original.  I don't remember how often it's supposed to be changed... but the guy before me did his own service, Ski Masters didn't mention it when they winterized/dewinterized last year.  I dunno...??

Festivus, I'm a mechanical idiot too, by the way. I had to get a local Toyota mechanic to remove the hoses for me (mine were fused on because of the factory paint).  Once I got the hoses free, this is about an hour-long deal.  I was blown away at how easy this is.  It looks scary... but it's a piece of cake.

One thing to add to Pete's instructions -- i had to also remove the three screws from the base of the master power switch (on the passenger side of the engine in my X22).  I'm guessing Pete's might have been in a different location than mine.  Pete, thanks for the instructions, they rocked.   ;D

Oh, got my impeller at Go2Marine.com.  The factory original is a Johnson 812.  But the one that I ordered is a Jabsco 13554-0001.  I know that when you search their site for a Johnson 812 it shows up.

When I get a few minutes, I'm going to update all the part numbers that have changed, and where I got them from, so that it will be in one list, rather than a bit of searching to figure out part numbers, etc.

Cal,
In the event you are getting lonley in the "stupid question corner" I would like to join you by asking this; What is this little impeller you keep talking about? I'm getting the idea it is related to the water pump, but im not sure.

Hey Terry,

I had no idea what they were talking about until a few months ago... When the serpentine belt moves, it turns the fresh-water pump.  Inside the fresh water pump is the impeller, which actually forces the water through the engine.  If it were to break/deteriorate too far (as mine was very close to doing), it would probably stop spinning, and your engine would overheat (though the ECU would likely let you know when your engine starts getting too hot, that's what could happen).

Anyway, it was a really easy project, but if you want any help, I'd be more than happy to help.  I'll be in Seattle the weekend of Feb. 26.

(Aaaah, that feels good...to actually be able to bring somehing to the table, mechanically...)  ;)

For you v-drive guys, I'll have an annual service PowerPoint akin to Cyclone's d-drive winterization procedure here shortly. Got all the pictures a couple weeks ago, just need to plug it all in.

Includes engine oil & filter, tranny fluid, v-drive oil, fuel filter and impeller. Think that's it. No anti-freeze procedures, though. No trailer stuff.

The impeller is 2 years or 200 hours by the book, but the warranty writer guy at Phil Dill told me to make sure and change it annually, that it's just not that big of expense for a significant addition to engine safety.

If the pump failed, the engine would probably heat pretty damn quickly. Not sure that the warnings would come quick enough.

The 2yr/200hr is probably a good number, though. Mine came out at about fifty hours and one year this year, and it was all but new. A good spare, for sure.

And this may be very obvious, but if you bought your boat recently and are wondering if the impeller and plugs have ever been changed, it's pretty easy to check.  Just look for the warn-off paint on the bolts that hold each of the units together.    If it's worn, the work's been done before.  If not, well... it's probably time.

Especially old-skool, old-service-person Washington kids (that's you Highflyin, 2000Epic, JeffCPA, JasonLi): mine went in for the winterization last year at 200 hours and they never mentioned it.  Might want to be on the safe side and check.

I guess it's the cool thing to be doing. So I will be replacing my impeller also. I noticed late last summer the high eng heat alarm would go off if I was running below 1000 rpm for a while. This would seem to me to be the early stages of an impeller failure.
gr8dna, thanks for looking out for us V-drive guys. BTW how difficult is this little impeller change going to be whith a motor that's flipped around backwords??

Not a big deal, just amke sure you have a camera ready when you pull that thing out. couldn't look much worse than Cal's, though ;-)
