The spring checklist...
« on: February 02, 2005, 00:42:08 am »
Okay, so done a lot of searches today, trying to determine all that I'm going to need to (finally) complete the first year winterization.  (remember, I drained fluids, and left it at that until I was excited about boating again...that time is NOW).

Checklist:
1) Replace impeller (old posts say to get at skidim, is there a part number?)
2) Replace fuel filter, either stock MF-11 or Mercruiser 35-60494-1
3) Replace oil filter, stock from LS 400, or Mobil 1 for LS 400.
4) Oil, Mobil 1 5W 30...8 quarts?
5) Transmission fluid: Dexron III GM Auto tranmission fluid, 4 quarts
6) Clean transmission filter (just a metal screen)

Is that it? Anything I'm missing??  Any service need to be done on the spark plugs? Any way of testing them to be sure they are firing properly?

Thanks,
Cal
p.s. dammit people, please start posting again.  It's almost wakeboarding season.  Geez.  :)

Impeller is a johnson 812

oil filter Toyota 90915-YZZB5 , Mobil 1 =M1-102 ,5w-30,  5.5 quarts

2.6 quarts for trans DD

And I keep an extra set of plugs with me all the time, fouled plugs ruined a couple of days on a trip.  And the fouled plugs looked just fine too.  Go figure

And I have the stupidest of questions, but I honestly don't know the answer.  What I'm doing is replacing fluids, worn out filters, etc.  If I was getting a true "tune-up", what additional would a shop do??

Take your money. There isn't much to do on these high tech motors but change plugs and fluids. You'll be fine with what you have described above.

I'm guessing it is the same, but I can't find the Johnson 812 impeller, just the 812B.  I think I'm going to order it and hope that it works, but wanted to see if anybody knew if it was the same?

Oh, and Pete, sorry for not checking the how-to pages first... I always forget (I have the forum bookmarked, so always go straight to it).

Thanks for all the help.

Don"t forget the all important rotating the air in your tires and the all ellusive muffler bearings.

When your boat is stored in a nice warm, heated shop; winterizing is a snap.  No need to drain water out of the block.

NICE!!!
18 Seasons without a single problem.  This boat ROCKS!!

I gotta scan all the ads I have from Waterski mag from 2000/2001. Two page ad of a Sequoia pulling an S22 with tower out of the water at some ramp with Sequoias all around. Trees that is. It is interesting to see how the profile of the roofline of the truck with the little spoiler kind of matched the line of the tower on the boat, with cool tower hat, of course.

I'll see if I can find them.

Cal, don't make me have my boys head up there and smack the crap outcha. Mobil1 makes ATF too. That's a filter, oil and filter, all with the same sticker.

Bustin chops, man, but you did it, spittin the 'GM' and stuff.

What I've read is that the OEM filters have the same construction as Mobil1, but not the same high-end filter material. I respect OEM, but not in the case of fluids and filters when you got stuff like Mobil1 and Amsoil and Red Line on the market.

Whatever...send your kids, I can take 'em.

Already bought the fuel filter (which they couldn't figure out what i was talking about until I said fuel filter/water separator...apparently there's a difference), oil filter (which was discontinued and has a new part number, I'll post later), and impeller.

Going to buy my fluids this weekend.  Having a hard time finding anywhere in dinky-little-Yakima that carries Mobil 1.  Heading back to Seattle this weekend.  Anything I need to know about Mobil 1 ATF?  Are there different kinds of ATF?

I can't wait until next year when I get to be the one answering the questions about this crap...!!

Fuel/water separator, aye. As far as ATF, the big thing is usually that they're the correct rating (in this case Dextron III). Normally, ATF is ATF is ATF. The Sequoia though requires special TOYOTA fluid - costs the same as synthetic, but ain't, and if you put synthetic in there, you've got warranty problems. Hate that sheeeehaut.

Cal, do you put enough hours on it that you change oil mid-season?

Agree that carrying spare plugs is good, but I just can't invest over $100 in spare plugs. This season, we'll be carrying the regular NGKs taken from the Sequoia at 30K miles. Still want to buy a spare belt.
