Pete's pimp lights
« on: February 07, 2005, 03:48:37 am »
Well, I have been going nuts over here at EpicMarine central. I used to think this stuff was way too boy racerish but lately my tastes have been broadening.  I saw a bunch of  boats on wakeworld and that were lit up with high bright LED lights, I thought about how darn cool the Epic dash is at night with the red lights. I decided that I would put a pantload of red LEDs in my boat, they don't pull any current to speak of, and my existing "courtesy" lights are about worthless. There is a red LED replacement bulb for our stock courtesy lights, btw.

I looked at the two styles of LED lights, they evolved out of the dork pc modder world, and weren't really suited to boat use, just a molded plastic shell with a coupla leds globbed together with solder.  They are also expensive, about 6 bucks ea, more for the nice ones from owl lighting. I think mine are as good or better than anyones design and construction wise.

These are hand made protos, and I firmly believe that the hardest thing to do in the world is to create two objects of the same dimensions with hand tools. I suck at it. If I ever am a Richard Branson type dude, giving away Epic Industries to a game show contestant, I'm going to make the contestants for my millions make two objects of the same size with hand tools, if they fail, I will humiliate them in front of the world because it is so obvious and pathetic that they have failed.

In real life, they don't take long to make and I made them from the round scrap that I cut out of the kickpanel, so I started with no straight lines. Six holes, three leds, one resistor, two wires and some 5 min epoxy. I'm gonna put them in places where only the light can be seen, like under the dash,  by the shifter pointing down at the drivers cup holder, heh. I think I'll put three on each side inside the side storage. I may put some in the black supports for my bow cushion, pointing down to light the walkway. I may embed one on each side in one of the bow cushions, illuminating the cupholder, etc.  All red in my case but the color doesn't matter.

Les, I  believe anything is possible lately.

Hey, have you thought about LED lighting in the Les Lounge? One of the cool things about boats is staying out after dark, as long as you know where you are and where you're going.

Well, I got the first set of lights hooked up. Some LEDs, and a string of really cool "grain of wheat" bulbs that I got on closeout at Boaters World. I hooked them all to spare courtesy light connectors that are in the harness near the aft part of the cooler in the side storage (port side). The light string is neat because you can cut it and splice it. I put about 4 feet around the port gunwale storage opening, and the other string on the starboard side but extending up above the drivers cupholder and under the dash to light up the subwoofer. Pretty cool and cheap, and it all works off the Courtesy lamp switch in the dash. Next step is a couple of LEDs in the cooler and some in the glovebox for when we're loading up and looking for my car keys. I used red because it matches the cool red dash lights. I also put six HB red LEDs in the black plastic supports for the bow cushion, shining down on each side.
