Boat Registry-need input
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:50:37 am »
Here's a 15 minute stab at how the registry could work. Have not figured out the photos yet. I'd be nice to be able to upload a photo. try it out all you want, but just know that once we decide on all the fields, You'll have to re-enter everything.

I entered my boat, but I'm sure we'll want more/different fields, but need input from the pros on this one.

Lemme know what kind of info you'd like to add to it, And, No, NO crew pics, that means you, Bitzco!  :-*

http://www.epicmarine.com/boat_search.php

Once we decide on all the stuff we want to capture, I'll clean it up and make it easy to view the records.

PS: I know i misspelled trailer. :-\

Les,
Darn good start, you covered all the bases on the first pass. You must be an absolute  hero among the retards at AJC. I hope they pay well, if not, when this Epic Registry thing gets rollin...

It would be nice if you could add a form that would fill a table for Epic sightings, they could be confirmed later by people that say '"hey, that was my boat three years before I owned it" then resolved to HIN numbers over time. I think that most entries will start this way, most of us only know the HIN of the one we own.

Model number, tower, year, color are the main things that people can identify from the water or street. Platform type must be important because Toyota wants near a f$$king thousand dollars for a fiberglass one. I don't even want to ask what a teak one costs, probably five grand.

Dealership/Lake/Location is very important, I've seen five times more Epics at the dealer than I have on the lake. Lots of people never take their boat out.

i just saw a '99 epic 22 on the Travel channel, no sheot. Most Disgustingly Opulent Lake Homes show. Yeah, I'm jealous. Dark green and white (tan maybe) I was so stunned that I didn't notice what lake it was on.

I filled out some fields.  Are the pictures going to be actual photos, or links to them?  Anyhow, can you use the same one that is on our profile, and if so, can you grab it, or do I need to dig up?  Thanks for warning Bitzco about his crew of blubber.

Wow, Pete, not sure whether to take that as a complement or not. Not so sure about the Editorial side, but on the Online Ad Ops side, we don't really have any retards working here.

How about just a status selection for "Owner" or "Sighted". Then all boats would be in the same database. None of the fields are required, and I'll add a comments section for details of the sighting. I'll add the location/dealership/Lake section to it as well.

Festivus, not sure on the photo thing yet. I'd like to be able to link the photos and display them in the database, but may be constrained there. May be able to have a field that is a link to the photo, so it's not actually stored in the databse. You can easily get the url to any photo online by doing the right click->properties thing.

I'll add the location/dealership/Lake section to it as well.

Derek, I'll add prop pitch etc, too.

No offense meant at all Les, I should have said "retards on the editorial staff" I know that you know your stuff. Sorry! ;D I just don't like the slant that paper puts on things. AJC Classifieds are great, website especially. I check for old cars every weekend, and the occasional Epic.

Hey, no problem, Pete, Cal and I will gang up on u next time.  ;D

OK, I'm impossing a deadline for input on the boat registry. Let's say this Friday. So far I've got:

Manufacturer
Model
Year
HIN
Color-ext
Color-int
Tower, stock, other
trailer Type
bimini - type
Prop - 3/4 blade
prop pitch??
Drivetrain -vdrive/ddd
Stereo - Stock/other
Ballast - Stock/other
Boat cover - yes/no
Owner contact info- this could be just an email address and not the person';s actual name
Dealer
Year Purchased
Previous owner??
Comments: this will be a section to add upgrades not mentioned above, plus sighting information
Photo: still need to figure that one out, buit would like to give the opportunity to upload a photo of the boat

Let me know if you want anything else in the database. We kinda have to agree on these before I start it. It's much harder to add fields later for various reasons.

What about a field to list other options like heater, racks, lights,  2nd battery, or other added equiptment? Or one that lists any major problems like sinking or new transmission or something like that? Maybe the State where the boat resides?

Ditto the accessories.
Also, maybe rather than cover: yes/no, what about type(s) of cover(s)?
Tow vehicle (s):
Home lake:
Salt water?

That's all I can think of. Great work Lesman!

Lesman, you da man.

My thinking with the prop and gearing was to have the place to record which combinations worked for which hulls. The epic database may not be the place for it, because in a perfect world, each boat owner would probably have tried more than one prop and would need to enter some description about each. It might be better to do like a sticky thread. There's a thread like this on TundraSolutions that lists all wheel and tire combinations tried on the V-8 Toys (couldn't find it in a quick search).

For this data to be any good, we'd need most or all of this prop info: manufacturer, material, model, diameter, pitch, and blade count. ALSO>>> need transmission (and v-drive) gear ratios, becuase I think there may have been different combinations beyond simply d- or v-. Finally, it'd probably be good to record driveshaft diameter.

Let's sit on this one for now, and in the mean time, maybe we should reevaluate adding any prop info???? Comments??? Maybe current prop info : "OJ Legend stainless 13" x 13" 4-blade" or "ACME 543 nibral 13" x 11.5" 3-blade", or....

Rick, That is cool!

I imagine that the data u access is not public domain. It would be cool if that lookup was online, kinda like a VIN exploder for a car. IF that data is in a database online somewhere, I could create an api to it so that anyone could enter their HIN and prefill many of the options, then add mods and upgrades.

If not, it would be nice to know all the different hull/interior colors so I could make those selectable from a menu.

I'd guess that info is kinda proprietary. No doubt it's buried behind a Toyota firewall, not suprising. It is a bit personal. It works if we can get it if we input our own HIN number and get it back, fair enough. Thanks, Rick!
