Has Anyone Removed The Port Side Petcock Assembely?
« on: June 18, 2005, 00:49:39 am »
Well the saga continues.  :( I found a compatible plug at a parts store, but it too will not thread into the assembely. I tried running a thread chaser through it to no avail, then I tried a tap and it too would not work. I need to remove the petcock assembely and am wondering if anyone else has done this? From the looks of it, its next to impossible to fit remove without first removing the exhuast manifold. Has anyone else removed this assembely before, if so how did you do it? If anyone could tell me the torque specs/sequence of the manifold that would be awesome. Hopefully I will FINALLY have this boat in by the end of the weekend, but for now I'm off to get a ton of wire to re-wire the trailer lights, I hope at least that the mice that ever so kindly removed the wiring were able to put it to good use.  >:( I'm really begining to hate these Wisconsin winters, every spring there is always lots of unexpected work to be done.

And I quote:

5. Install right hand exhaust manifold to cylinder head.

 (a) Place a new gasket on the cylinder head with the white painted marks facing the manifold side.

NOTICE: Be careful of the installation direction.
 (b) Install the exhaust manifold with 8 new nuts. Uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes.

Exhaust manifold 32 ft/lbs.

Blah blah blah for the left side. No pattern shown. New gaskets, new nuts.

Are you sure you can't remove it without removing the exhaust manifold? I am assuming that the nut on the end of the petcock is buggered and leaking, and you want to fix that. Are you not able to thread the piece into the petcock assy? I figure that is where you want to put in the pipe plug that you bought.

Get an open end wrench around the body of the petcock assy, or a pair of vice grips, I can't remember if it is hexagonal or round. You should be able to do that without removing the exhaust manifold. Turn it until it comes out, then get a plug the same thread to plug the hole in the block.

OR, remove the exhaust manifold and get to it that way. The manifold is stainless, so it is less prone to cracking than cast iron manifolds. Torque it evenly in a star pattern when reinstalling it, shouldn't be a problem. Technically, you should replace the gasket but I would not let that keep me off the lake. BUT, that's just me, I cut corners when I think I can get away with it.

I removed the petcock assembly and replaced it with a barb fitting for my hot water shower.  I used a "crows foot" on a universal joint on a 6in. extension to remove the petcock assembly.  However, while I was doing this I was wishing I had a set of stubby wrenches, I will next time.

Hey 2000epic,

Just wondering if you could clarify which part you removed (and you're talking about the petcock that drains the block, right?)? I also need to remove the port petcock assembly on the block. Believe it or not, when de-winterizing this year the head of the brass bolt that closes the petcock broke off during the tightening process (the darn thing wouldn't stop leaking and I tried just a little tighter...)! Thus, there is no way to get the rest of the bolt removed without getting an easy-out in there.

It looks as if the whole assembly is threaded right into the block but I'm a little nervous about removing it unless I hear someone else has tried it?

On a related topic, does anyone know if the entire block will drain out the starboard petcock?

I'd hate to find out that it doesn't one spring. I think I would try to remove the whole assembly and rework/replace it.

Good to have you on the site, the more the merrier:)

I removed the whole assembly.  The barb was installed into the block.  I could have used port or star side, but for reasons I can't remember the port side looked easier.  It was a little nerve racking because that petcock assembly is in there super tight.  Also when unscrewing the assembly that little drain tube that sticks down came in contact with the exhaust manifold so I bent it over (otherwise I'd send it to you)

Hello, I'm new here...have had my boat (2001 X22) about a year and just did my first winterizing this past year...tell me about those Petcock valves....I had a very hard time getting them open and then closed..what is the deal??? Can you get replacements or do you want to try and do something different...I would hate to have to take the whole manifold off, but I guess if you break the head off one or something there is no choice???

You can drain the block or fill it with antifreeze. Either way works, I drain mine so I can get it back in the water quick on a warm day in Jan/Feb:)
