High pitched whining sound?????
« on: June 24, 2005, 06:27:10 am »
Hi Ya'all

I have a high pitched whining sound and as I accelerate it gets worse.

I did winterize procedure myself using the Forum how-to.
Have about 107 hours (so put on 35 in my first summer) on my 99 X22.

Also as I was troubleshooting today I noticed that if accelerated forward and then backed off fast, water would shoot out of the pipe area which comes out of the Sea Strainer (towards motor).

Is this normal? related to whining noise?

Any ideas appreciated........

Man, I'm glad that wasn't MY procedure :-) Just kidding of course.

Does it happen in neutral? If so, you'd better check the tension and condition of the drivebelt, might try running on the trailer to see if the water pump is pushing water out the exhaust.

I'd think the sea strainer water problem (and it IS a problem) is unrelated to the whining. Gotta work on that, too.

The only whining thing I've seen is from the strut bearing/bushing under the boat when running in gear, dry, while on the trailer.

If this happens only in gear, I'd probably check the engine alignment (procedure at left) and then take it to a tech and say WTF? Sounds pretty scary to me, but then again it could be something real simple.

Thanks TF

My thinking is the alignment also.........in neutral the motor purrs nicely.

Is it just me or does that procedure (alignment) sound complicated?

I will take strainer out and reattach and tighten. It must be this connection.

Could also be the transmission -- mine is making a whining noise, but it goes away when I get up on a plane.

Is it coming through your speakers?  Have you done any work to the stereo lately? Could be interference from the RCA's and ground wire being wired too closely together...  Or it could be the drive belt... (But I have no idea about the water strainer situation.)

Jeff, a handful of us will be in your neighborhood this weekend -- going up to Pateros again.  If you're in the mood to make a day trip this weekend, you should swing by and say hello.  Or if your family is looking for somewhere to go, I have a couple extra rooms I have booked -- was going to cancel them tomorrow.  Let me know if you want one or two.

Cal,

You're right it could be the transmission............actually that is where the sound is coming from, that area or below it. Any ideas? With as few hours as I have it's hard to believe.

I might do the day trip thing up to Pateros. It being so close (an hour) I don't need the room(s). This is the big Weekend coming up surely it will be crowded. I will email you and get more details. Thanks for the reply!

Pic of my Tranny stick.

Anyone know how high the level should be?

My thought is above the second line(mark) is too full.

Over filled probably not good......thus the whistle/whining??????

Fluid level is checked hot and engine off. Lay stick w/o threading in. Level is full at top line. Add at lower line.

OK, my boat guy here says whistle/whine could just be air intake sound.

As far as the water coming in around Sea Strainer hose to engine......I pinpointed exact place where water is "spraying out". Where the hose meets the metal the metal has seperated just a hair in from where the hose attaches. See picture.....the vertical line in the black metal goes all the way around. I obviously will need a new part here.

Any ideas?

The way all the clamps and everything in the area are all chewed up and scratched I would say this problem was going on when I bought the boat. They never found problem and/or fixed it.

Can't see from that pic unless you draw a circle using Paint or something, but if it is just a cracked metal piece you can probably get it welded up. It may have been bad since new, or for a long time.

I saw a massive houseboat on the 4th that was named SeaPA. Pretty cool. Obviously a rewarding line of work!

Thanks Cyclone!

Yeah the pic turned out shitty......

I will take another tomorrow.

The only prob with welding is it is a connection of two metal pieces so it goes all the way around....so I guess I remove the whole piece and then weld.

Here is better pic for exact location. At white arrow you can see vertical gray line.......barely.

Only way I could pinpoint water spraying outa here was having clam shell open and getting on it (30 or more mph).

You'd have to remove the piece to get it welded. Is it still under warrantee? Most boats aren't but if yours is, I definitely would take advantage of it.

Otherwise, you may have to remove your exhaust manifold to get to it, no big deal but I would order a gasket, don't put the old one back on. Torque it according to the manual, I can give you the torque sequence from my engine manual if you don't have it.
