Throttle linkage problem
« on: July 10, 2005, 23:39:57 pm »
I'm having a problem with my throttle/engine idling high.Let me tell you a story...We started to pull out of an idle zone, when I pushed the throttle forward. When I did, something felt really tight.I pulled back, then tried it again. This time not as tight but I had to floor it all the way to get the boat going.
I stopped immediately,& pulled up the motor box.the perfect pass throttle link looked twisted in a way.I straightened it out, tightened the nut & throttle now works fine...HOWEVER...now the engine is idling really high.About 1200-1500rpm.I've played with the hardware on the linkage, but no joy.I can push the linkage by hand and it will respond, but goes right back when I let off.If anyone has an idea, please feel free to jump in!?!?Thanks a million.? ?Todd

When I designed the bracket, I tried to give it the best angle that would allow the throttle to return to the home position so it would get back to normal idle. There is some adjustment on the PP cable so that you can move it back and forth .25 in or so to get the best postion. I made it so the bracket put the cable in the center of the adjustment.

I would check to make sure that the brass piece that attaches to the PP cable is tight, it has a shoulder washer that keeps it so there is always free movement. Make sure that it is not binding up but the attachment screw is tight so that the brass piece doesn't turn crooked.

Check the PP cable to make sure that it is not kinked and binding up.

If that still doesn't work, I would detach the PP cable, put the original ball stud back on and verify that the original throttle mechanism works like it did before.

You can gain a little clearance for a straighter shot on the PP cable by loosening the big hose clamp on the air horn, remove the rubber spacer and bolt and turn the assembly down by 10 deg or so. Put the retaining bolt back in without the spacer. I'll take a pic when I get a chance.

I'll pm you with my cel no if you want to talk about what you find.

Pete,I made every adjustment I think possible, including the air horn,& got the idle down to 1100.I had to give up for a couple days due to Dennis making its way into the midwest.Today I went back out for another go at it.I kind of twirled the P/P cable(if that makes sense),then started it up.Now the idle is dwon to 600-700.I'm not sure if the cable was twisted or not,but hell,it's working now!!Thanks for the advice!!Todd

The cable may have been twisted, kind corkscrewed around in side the jacket. That could have hung things up a bit. Glad you fixed it!
