Wakejunky is right about labor at boat dealerships.  In our area, there is one guy who's been trained in TMS repair and he works for the Lexus dealership.  When there is an Epic problem that is brought into the boat dealership, they have a deal where the Lexus guy will come over to the boat dealership with all of the Lexus dealership's diagnostic equipment, etc. to make the repair.  It works well and it is priced competitively based upon dealer repair costs that people quote on this site.

I'm sure that's true, anyone with the training to work for Lexus would be a fool not to get top dollar for it. Around here, there's one guy that knows Epics, he works for the CC dealer now. The new guys at the former TMS dealer don't know diddly.

This thread stirred up a yellow jacket nest. I just got bitten by one yesterday so the analogy seems fitting. With only 6 weeks of ownership under my belt, I am NOT qualified to toss in my 2 cents worth but I will skirt around a few issues.

I am fortunate to already know Cyclone and Breakawaydaze. Both have valid points when you know where they are coming from. Pete has his heart and soul into these boats. Anyone notice how many posts he made last night? Can anyone say they wouldn't freak out if he said, "Screw this, I shutting down the site and buying a gay wrestler boat"? IMHO, Cyclone is expressing frustration because he wants so much for Toyota to love the boats, and the boat owners, as much as he does. Again, in just my opinion, Breakawaydaze has expressed a view that stems from his knowledge of a related business and from a corporate factual reality. It is the head vs. the heart. Compromise solution available? That would require an answer - I am only good at questions. Does Toyota care about 400 boat owners? SHOULD they? Elevate it to the next level - Does Toyota care about their next venture into the unknown? How they handle this one may (or may not) affect the buying public's willingness to venture into it with them. Several have mentioned that Toyota lost a ton of money on the Marine experience. Must be a pisser and embarrassing to boot. They probably want to put it behind them. However, character is displayed not by how we handle the good times - too easy- but how we handle the rough times. While they decide (perhaps they already have) what type of corporate citizen they want to be, I will be out on the E21. I do LOVE driving that boat. Breakawaydaze, 96 hours. I almost hate to go to triple digits but I see it coming this weekend!

Now that people have vented, maybe things will settle back down or maybe a boil is festering. This is where being a newbie hurts me - I don't know. Regardless, use group think if moving forward...

Oh, as to the thought about people that rag out their boats and then want Toyota to fix everything for free - Toyota should be able to tell the difference in that type person and someone like Cyclone, Breakawaydaze and, hopefully me and tell the dirt heads to go screw themselves. I am willing to bet that the people that frequent this website are ones that take care of their boat. Maybe Toyota should find a way to differentiate and treat us special. As a minimum, I don't think that Cyclone (and perhaps one or two others, not me, that contribute so much here) should EVER have to pay for a part - EVER! If Toyota cannot find a way to say Thank You to Cyclone, well, just (b)eat me. Is there ANYONE on this website that could encourage anyone at Toyota see the importance of that?????????????????????????????????? (Anyone living near T9 perhaps? Anyone that works in the industry or a related field perhaps?)

As to the original topic (novel thought) - there is nothing that has ever been made that cannot be fixed. It may not be the perfect fix or economically justified fix but it can be fixed. Not having the option involved, I cannot envision the exact problem - a leak in a soft component or hard? Where? Parts is parts. I have some marine Goop. It fixes anything! Seriously, some suggestions have already been made. Others probably will be offered if enough info is given. RYPDAVIS, do you want to repair your boat or would you perhaps prefer to find a different one - Toyota or otherwise? Think on that one, as it will come to that-

If this post seems slightly out of sync - it is. I tried repeatedly to post it yesterday but was haviing trouble with error messages. I am to stubborn to just move on-
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

Welcome to the site, Wreck. Now that you're kinda stuck between venting and holding your tongue, between being excited about the boats and scared about the company, between wanting to rant and wanting to rave....you're growing up into your Epic adulthood.

Thing is, we all bounce between 1) the boat's off-the-shelf and reliable, and 2) there're gonna friggin walk! To date, we've been pretty upfront on this site, but that's changing. Long-time guys like Epicrider are bailing and need to get what's fair from tehir boats - when the average prospective buyer comes to the site, he will probably not get through negative discussions like this without reverting to BU. The people who hang on and end up buying one of these is gonna be more of an enthusiast.

Fact is, no manufacturer can live up to the expectations of their enthusiasts.

That said, we all know that it wouldn't take much to bring goodwill towards TMS back up to where it belongs. A few gestures (like opening up the inventory lists, offering copies of service instructions, etc.) would go a long way towards getting us back on the same team.

Maaan! I go away for a few days of r and r with Festivus and war breaks out on the site. Nice. I also bought my Toyotas knowing what I was getting into. I have loved my Toyota cars and trucks. They rarely break, and when I, through my own stupidity, have damaged them, Toyota fixes em and does it right. I can't say the same for the American car dealers. I have to admit though, that I always feel raped by the dealer when he hands me the invoice. Anyway, when I bought my Epic, I knew repairs wouldn't be cheap once the warranty expired. I knew I would have to pay for my careless mistakes with the boat and that eventually it would get old and need repairs because of its age. I knew the invoice for the boat repairs would be jsut as bad as the one for the cars (even worse just because its a boat). I bought 3 Epics anyway. I love my boat. Just ran it for many hours at Powell. It was flawless as usual. It sipped the gas and ran quiet. Very nice.

I do, however, wish Toyota would open up that knowledge vault. For example, I asked a while back why the change in v-drive ratios and which boats had the change. Capt. Rick was noticably silent on the matter. I'm sure he's got constraints from the company and I am truly grateful for the tidbits he is able to give when he does so. I am also sure that Toyota believes there is serious liability involved if he says more than he does. Thanks to the sue happy bastards that are ruining our world, Toyota is probably right to keep thier mouths shut. I hate it, but the more they say, the more ammunition some bastard has to sue them with. For my part, I'm not going to sue anybody and I'm going to be glad that I still get good service (albeit expensive service) at my former Toyota dealer. If Toyota decides to not be afraid of law suits at some point, I'll also be happy to have access to their maintenance docs. Thanks Capt. Rick, thanks Cyclone, and thanks to everybody else who has become part of our little community. I feel bad for the guys who bought their yotas new and expected better from Toyota. For those of us who bought them post work stoppage. I don't feel too bad. We knew (or should have known) what we were getting into -- a terrific boat with repair, parts and maintenance isssues down the road.

and a good few days of r-n-r it was.  Bitzco is a mad man on a wave runner.  He thinks it is only supposed to be an 8 second ride, so he digs in and rides it like a heifer.
Quite the post we have going here.  I agree that most of us knew what we got ourselves into before we made the investment (?).  Now my dilemna is when to get out.  I am not a mechanically gifted owner, I actually couldn't find the cylindrical shaped ignition alarm that was supposedly a no-brainer.  So I don't know when to call it a great experience and move on.  I have absolutely no local support here in Denver.  The previous dealer is still here, but the guy who winterized my boat there a few years ago was in shock/awe of just seeing the Toy V-Drive.  "My first time" he reassured me.  So I find myself wondering if I should sell while my S22 while it is in such good condition, or take a chance and see what it is worth in a few years. I know we've been over this, and I do love my boat, I just don't want to see it go from a 22-25k floater to a charitable contribution.  Maybe Toyota's lack of any help is indicating that they want us all to go away and their boats to be permanently dry-docked.  No more liability.  If so, I'm out.  Why would they give us nothing to work with.

Well put Wreck.. and you other guys too. I really like my boat and won't ever sell it, but it can be frustrating sometimes. I can't blame someone for getting a different boat, but for me I can't justify it for what I would give up in low maintenance, high reliability and low fuel consumption. Plus, I like being one of a chosen few.

I didn't mean to sound like I was directing my rant at Bill or Rick, just at a faceless corporation that purports to care about their customers but has a funny way of showing it. I think some good things will come about soon, some more gravy for our taters as far as site content goes.........;)

First Day on the site.... Interesting thread on internal ballast.? Was hoping to find info on sac placement.

Just have to say "I love you man!"? Every damn one of you!!

I just bought 1200 pounds of x-series fly high sacks...first time using ballast... and two tsunami pumps for my 01S22.?

I bought the V-drive size ones (400 Lbs. & 42 inches long) and expected them to fit on either side of that sweeet power-plant and one in the bow.? They are sold in sets of two so I even have a spare.? I Couldn't find anyone that wanted to ride so I just road out to dry storage (45 minutes each way) on a Sunday morning to sit in the boat and picture where they would go.? One on either side of the engine under the sun deck with room still to spare on top for storage.? One in the bow floor which as it turned out fits perfectly so the storage door can still be opened.? (Only 15% reduction in fill weight due to the isle width sloping from ~16" to 6" as you get closer to the bow.)? But then I discovered there's only 32 fricken inches on either side of the power-plant.? I was bummed.? Worried that if I filled it up to conform to the space that the paneling would break... but then something made me focus and look down... there was a nice handled knob astern on the floor.? Said to myself, "Made by TMD" it must have a purpose... I turned it several times.? It released and pow the back panel easily slide out.? I was looking into one slide of the rear gear locker!!!!? More room than I needed!!!?

Now here is a way to customize the shape of the storage comparents and still keep the motor enclosed.? And if you didn't keep the engine enclosed no big deal!!!? ?

I'm so happy about this and amp'd about trying the wake this weekend that I even googled "toyota epic" this week so I wouldn't pop!? And subsequently found this mess ;)

To the original topic -- my two cents.? Fix it!? Go back to the dealer or make a plea of help to the experts here and do it yourself!? Ask for help in finding a weather balloon and is it a 50% or 30% dilution on the glue.? Do both... use this site's advice to push your dealer.? ? Keep doing your own homework and sending requests until it's fixed.

I've had my computer replaced twice and was off the water for 4 months in prime summer b/c it took my dealer 4-EVER to finally diagnose a bad airflow sensor.? I drove down to the dealer at least 5 times to pick it up only to find it wasn't working each time.? I called and called.? I dealt with the excuses... I pushed them with my ideas on what to do.? I faxed the owner copying local media and the better business bureau about the crappy service.? They finally gave the right tech. enough time to think through the problem.? Every one associated with that dealer prob. knows me by name and prob. hates me.? But oddly enough 1 on 1? a few have pulled me aside say it's an sweet boat and they respect me for pointing out there issues and are happy that I don't have a grudge against them personally.? ?There's still some minor tension when I go in for service, but I've come to respect them more now as well.

I thought this site was a bunch of whiners, but I've started to see the dilemma.? (whiners who know a shit-load by the way!? After only reading 4 threads)

Unless the rumors I've heard are true that there is still a market and engine production in Asia... Or a miracle happens in the market... I've now come to the realization that this forum and this boat's course is set.? Membership can most likely only go down.? No boat... even a Toyota will look the same in 20 years.? ...that one just hurt me...? But damn it I bought it planning not to sell it and in 20 yrs. it will have been a bargain.? Not to mention the little things like removable bulkheads that I will enjoy through the years.? If I have to trade/scrap it before 20 years then it will be a dark and sad day in my life.? But it's better to be a has been than never was!? And GD this is something special!!? At least for me!!?

Would like also to help contacting Toyota.? Have experience with Big Companies and their thinking.? If any of the "items" expressed prior have been requested in writing pls. forward.? Can also forward to texasbo2001@yahoo.com.? If written requests have been made was there a response??

Will also play this ticket for the cause in this Friday's Texas Mega Millions Lottery

welcome boneil.  I am guessing you are from or live in Texas?  What part?  I know Bitzco has his rear storage panel removed and the added storage is nice.  Post some pics of your boat!

Wlcome to the site, and nice pics! It's always nice t see a new goofy-footer being born. Is that Lewisville? My S22 was borne there, purchased at Phil Dill and stored in a vault for three years. Then we came along....

That comment about the whiners...I've heard that before, like exactly the same verbiage. Thing is, if you looks back at our posting, I think you'll find that we're probably the most positive group of boat owners around. Even my whiney a$$ doesn't whine too often ;-)

Hey Festivus and Bitzy, my truck is loaded for bear right now. Was supposed to be driving 600M north tonight, but have to get a couple hours sleep. Canoe on top, bikes on back, squating to the frame...looks straight out of a Powell post ;-) Must get a picture of this before some cop pulls me over and cites me for violation of article 982...Way Too Ghetto In Public. Itf I could have just made it out of the LA area, like maybe Bakersfield before sunup, I'd have been out of the 90210 jurisdiction.

Derek, that is great.? I hope all of the epic'ers know that Bitzco is the red neck here, not me.? He always talks me into staying in those single-wide trailers because he doesn't wanna flip the bucks for a real hotel room or a houseboat.? Your dragging me down Bitzco!

Strange coincidence, but my S22 was purchased new at Phil Dill as well, March 2002.? A local guy bought it and had it until August of 2003.? He kept it at Pier 121 in a covered storage area.? When I flew down there to look at it, it looked like new.? He did a terrific job keeping it clean and preserved.? I can't say I have been as nice to it, but I sure use it a lot more.? I store it indoors at least.?

This pic is from last weekend at Powell.
