Mirror Mirror on the...
« on: July 20, 2005, 13:52:09 pm »
boat.

I have been thinking about new mirror. The one I am using is mounted via a suction cup on the observer's side so I can open the windshield (to breathe). Needless to say, when someone is in that seat, I begin to strain my neck every which way to see anything since they are yapping to me instead of watching the person being pulled. I want one on the driver's side, above the windshield as I don't want to block my forward vision. I really like Cyclone's tower mount but a quick Froogle search indicated a price tag going towards $300. Reality is that I should watch the budget, especially since I do have a spare kid. I saw a couple of pictures in the photo section (files 4 and 8 of 309 - Toyotafreak and Lesman) that look to be what I need. I used the TMS parts lookup and there are two brackets as well as a mirror listed. Before I try to find a price on these parts, is this what most use? Which bracket? Are there other suggestions? There is a CIPA concept mirror that says it is "the standard" for tournament boats. There is also a CIPA Extreme that has 3 sections and appears to be about a foot high and two miles wide. Overkill? Anyone looking to get rid of a mirror?

Not sure where mine came from, but noticed this last trip that it locks right on to the windshield frame like it was meant for it. Sorry, not a lot of help.

Mine came with it on there. It's got 2 round thumscrews that hold it on the window frame, puls it tilts and swivels pretty easily. I'll take a pic tonight so maybe you can describe it and get a price.

That would be great - plus any identifying name/model number, etc. The ones I have seen on the Web seem to be either 4in x 8in or 7in x 14 in - quite a big jump.

Lesman, thanks for the pics.

The TMS parts lookup shows two brackets, a taylor and a water bonnet (?) so I will inquirre as to the pricing of the Taylor type.

I have looked at Overton's and many other places. I even bought one that looked right but the mirror wouldn't rotate fully to allow mounting over the windshield. I have only seen one mount that looks even close to this one. No such thing as a standard mirror mount...

I have the same mirror. They had them at Marine Products in Salt Lake the last time I looked.

ok, so maybe it isn't called standard, but it is the most common.  My Moomba came with one and somehow I ended up with another one.  They can't be that hard to find.  I do wish we had a tower mount system to get the mirror off the windshield.

I figured out that it is the same bracket that came with the 2004 Cipa Comp mirror. The new mirror is cheaper but now has a RAM mount which doesn't look as stable. I emailed Kurt yesterday re: pricing on the brackets and mirror but haven't heard back yet.

The tower mount that Barts and Overtons has is $270. Cyclone has a neat one. Pete, where did you get yours? I would also prefer to get the mirror off the windshield, up and out of my field of vision.

Lesman"s mirror is the same as mine.  It came with my boat and works great.  I have seen one in Overton's that looks to be the same.  It was priced around $80.  When I get a new one, it will attatch to my tower.  Unfortunately, they are pretty expensive!!!

This looks like the same one we have. It's 170 deg 7x14. the other cheaper ones are smaller.

OK, you folks have been patient with this topic so I figured I better do a little research to contribute something to the pot. I am currently blasting through cyberspace at 14.4K (connected through my cell phone) so research is not as easy as I would like it to be. I found a few basic things and will do more when I get back to my broadband connection late next week.

Lesman, yes, that is the mirror and bracket. Overton's is selling the same mirror with a different (loooks cheaper) bracket for $80. When and if I ever hear back from Kurt at Atl Marine, I will let you know the price of the bracket through them. You can get the bracket like you curently have for $63 here: (http://rpminnovations.com/marine-b.htm).

Since several expressed an interest in tower mounts, I found a bracket that works with what most of you seem to have (CIPA 170 deg) for $115 ($110 if you have a 2.5 in diameter tower). The price includes shipping. (www.monstertower.com/accessory6.html) They also sell the bracket with the mirror for $170(165) but you can order the mirror at rpminovations for $40 and save a few bucks if shipping doesn't eat up the diifference.

I think I found Cyclone's bracket (Roswell brand) but couldn't find a price. It will also accomodate the CIPA Extreme mirror.

The monster mount is just a bracket and a quick connect to an aluminum tube that slides in the indentation on the back of the Cipa 170 deg mirror. Ideally, I want a black bracket to match my tower and would like to use the CIPA extreme mirror. BTW, it is on sale right now for $89 at rpminovations. Is there enough interest to see if someone will offer a volume discount on the bracket or perhaps fabricate one for us or have we beat the subject to death?

I did the tower mount recently so I have an extra mirror like Lesman's.  Let me know how I can get it to you (the rubber gasket needs replacement, but otherwise is in good condition).
