Need Help with Speedo/Depth Finder
« on: July 21, 2005, 18:20:26 pm »
???I have a 2002 Epic V drive with occasionally the speedo stays at zero both digital and needle. Then it will work the next time I stop the engine and start a pull again.? It has been doing it more lately.? Also the depth finder has never worked consistently. one day out of 4 maybe and not all day.? It reads "bad status".? ?GPS seems to work all the time as does the [digital] engine readout, hours, temp, oil pressure, gals of gas.? Any ideas on what to do?? Thanks boys!! ???

Wakefoot,
Your pitot tubes are clogged up on your transom. Use a straight pin and some wd40 to blast the crud out of the little pickup tubes, you'll be good to go until they clog again. Get perfect pass, you won't regret it.

Thanks for the offer of a pull on the Snake,  but I'll be at about 30kft when I'm passing through Idaho!

You and anyone else are all welcome to come out with me and my boys if you come through Atlanta. You might see a couple of Epics there!

I did it and that fixed the speedo. I just went from front to back. should I try and stick a wire way up inside at an angle or what?   Is the sensor for the depth and water temp in another location or all in that one pickup thing?

The depth finder transducer is mounted inside the hull in the bilge, in a little molded pocket usually. Mine is near the back of my engine (Ddrive) drivers side. It is a black disk about 2 in dia. and about .75 in thick. It has a black wire coming out of it. It is glued to the hull. Yours may have come loose. It is also possible that one of the wires to the two boxes that support the depth finder (black, about 6" square, mine are under the dash) has come loose. One box has the other end of the transducer cable, the other has a multiconnector plug that goes up in the dash to the multifunction gauge. Check the connections. There is 12vdc and ground wires that are hooked to the ignition (purple) wire near your keyswitch. My connections are terrible, the wiring was done by a very bad mechanic. My depth finder does not work, I need to rewire mine, I'll take pics when I do it.

ON the vdrives, the depth finder in the front under the first floorboard to the right of the bilge pump. Mine does not work either. I looked at it and it appears that everything is in order. It's mounted very flush and the wires look like they are all tight.

Every now and them my "deep" alarm warning will go off and say it's like 800ft or something. Never new I neeeded a warning for deep water.

Hey Wakefoot, I was wondering if the avatar you have in your profile is really you.  I know that our epic brethren are wondering the same thing, but I'll be the one to ask.
So, is that you?
Just curious.

I wouldn't answer any of Festivus' personal questions. He'll weasel his way into your life and you'll never get him out.

Here Is the answer to who that is.  It is me!!! only in 1978!!!   I worked on charter boats in San Diego every summer for 8 years and this was taken when I came home for school at the age of 17.  I don't look like that now. [I wish!!]  My mom sent me that photo a couple months ago so I scanned it and showed it to my kids.  They had never seen their beach bum dad when he was cool and had no fat.

anyway back to the depth finder.  I cannot find the exterior transducer on the hull anywhere.  I guess I will look in the bilge and see what I can do.

I have been getting warnings of shallow water for 3 years now. Drives me crazy.  says its 1 feet and I know its over 30 feet.    Took it to "Ski Masters"  in Seattle who did nothing and I live 6 hours away so now the warranty is expired and I am trying to fix it myself.  any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wakefoot, the transducer is right next to your bilge pump, which is under the furthest forward floor panel. The electronics package that the transducer cable hooks up to is under the dash area and has a LOWRANCE sticker on it.

Your problem is likely the transducer. If there is a problem with the electronics, the depth finder usually won't be recognized by the multigauge and won't show up in the menu when you try to select it. The transducer has to be bonded to the hull properly or it won't work, giving you faulty depth readings. I'd check how well the transducer is attached, and either reattach or replace it. I'd do a search on Wakeworld for help on how to bond the transducer to the hull, I know it has been discussed at length there.

Dang, I remember when I was cool, it was also back in the 70's... The good thing is, my sheot is back in style now. I went to buy some clothes the other day and they are selling the exact same crap I wore in high school! Of course, I'm several sizes larger now!
