Water in the trunk area
« on: August 24, 2005, 17:39:12 pm »

'Nother question for the gallery:

Not to be SUPER anal retentive or anything, but I keep getting an annoying amount of water in the trunk of my S22. I'm not sure how it's getting in, but the place where the carpets soaks is on either side where the transom eyes and platform bracket mounts are. A little water comes in at the transom light, too but that should be an easy fix.

Problem with water back there is that it doesn't dry very quickly, and the trunk lid needs to be open for it to dry. Leave it shut and it'll stink out in a heartbeat. The area inside there is fully carpeted (even better than the Natiques are), and I've been hesitant to pull the carpet down to checky check it out. Don't want to rip or stretch the stuff if I don't have to (and is that regualr contact cement, or what?)

There's another problem here in that if it's the platform mounts that are leaking, and the fix is to remount them...if you look under there you'll see that the platform-side of the mount covers the bolts that secure the boat-side of the mount ot the hull. In other words, it doesn't look like you can install the mounting brackets while your platform is installed to them. Because of that, there's gonna to be some risk of misalignement.

The answer is probably to mount the platform to the platform mounting brackets, hold it all in place and then mark on gelcoat where one of the brackets need to go, then install that one bracket. Next, remount the platform to that installed bracket and mark the position of the other bracket. If after installing the second bracket everything doesn't line up, I guess we'd have to detach the teak from the aluminum and then reattach. Sounds like a lot of work ;-0

FINALLY, there's another issue too. I've just noticed some discoloration in the gelcoat around both transom eyes. The color is a little off-white, and if I recall, the patches are rectangular about 6" by 8". The patches are about the same size, are centered on the eyes, and aren't circular, so I think they're probably reinforcement (fabric patches) that are now showing through for some reason. If they were circular or oval, I'd think it was from water entering there and leaching into the layup. Might try to get a picture of them patches, but don't have high hopes that my camera will pic it up well.

I hang one of those damp-rid things in my ski locker when i store it. Usually does the trick, even closed.

It could be as simple as people sitting on the back and water trickling around the sides or even through the upholstery.  I always get some back there too, even when we never opened it while on the water.  It will dry out if it's just a little bit of water, but in my X22, I sometimes get little pools of water in the folds of my ballast sack when it's empty...I usually just towel all that up and call it good.  Also, my X has a little hose that runs water from the gutter out the back of the transom.  You may have a leak in that hose, also??
