Re-carpeting our epics
« on: October 13, 2005, 21:40:46 pm »
Has anyone done this yet?  If so, how did it go, pretty easy or a pain in the a$$?  Looking for a new winter project and i think this will be the one...lucky me!

It can't be easy. But I'd love to hear how it goes, cuz I'd love to do the same thing.

I don't think it would be THAT hard. You pull up the middle panels and remove the clamshell, then just replace the horizontal carpet. It peels up off the gelcoated floor pretty easily. You'd probably want to remove the side panels and the drivers seat. And the kickpanel. I think I would not replace the carpet in the trunk, I'd just try to hide the seam back by the gas tank. Or, you could go the extra mile and pull the back seat backrest and the gas tank. My pal did it on his Brendella over the winter, it came out looking good.

I think I would spring for the good carpet from Toyota, the lowes stuff is pretty thin.

It looks like contact cement that holds the carpet down.

Thanks pete for the heads up.  i think i am going to get carpet through the mastercraft dealer, seems like their carpet holds up better than ours.

Has anyone tried cleaning their carpet? Mine's looking kind of dirty. Wondering if a "rug doctor" / steam cleaner is the best way to go?

I clean it with a stiff bristle brush and boat soap (only once a year). Usually just vacuum it out after most trips.

Shawn, in the v-drive, the carpet was sandwiched between the floor/liner and the interior piece above that (the piece that becomes a seat when you put cushions on top of it.) Haven't figured out how to reengineer that.

I have thought that when our carpet gets pretty nasty, I'll just have a removeable carpet made to lay on top of the old stuff.

Hi-end alternative would be to set up a real snap-in carpet system where you take all the carpet out of the main floor and then like spray in a bed liner material or something and have a removeable carpet made. This way you could unsnap and remove the carpet and dry the interior in a matter of minutes.

You can also order the piece in the bow already cut and hemmed.
