Temperature Questions and possible thermostat replacement?
« on: October 21, 2005, 04:39:11 am »
How much does a thermostate cost, is it very difficult to install, and how do I know whether or not I should replace it?  My boat last (this past) season, 2005, my 99 E22 ran a little hotter than normal, but I think that was in part due to the minimal oil pressure.  It seemed as if I had almost no pressure when idling, and the warning horn kept going off all the time.  I changed the oil about a month and a half ago, and there was nothing wrong with it (no shavings, ect.), but I am a little worried about it.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
~Erik~

Hi Scarab, There are many threads about hi temp in the forum. Try this one:

http://www.cyclone-cj.com/forum4/index.php?topic=501.0

What i do know is that the readings are often wrong. BUT, make sure the sea strainer is clean. the impeller is good, and the thermostat is good. sea strainer is the little clean canister that has a wire screen in it. It unscrews and the wire screen comes out.

Running a dedicated 10 gauge wire from the neg battery post to the ground terminal under the dash seemed to fix my overheating problem....meaning that I did not really have hi temp, but inaccurate readings. According to Captn Rick, you should be able to touch the intake manifold. If it's too hot to touch, it's running too hot. I did not check this myself as the ground wire fixed my hi temp readings. If i get hi reading again, i'll try that.

The thermostat is really easy to check. it's not hard to find, just follow the water line into the engine. It comes out with 2 screws i think. Pete gave me the idea to check to make sure it was opening up properly by putting it in a pan of hot water on the stove and make sure it springs open at the right temp...around 160 i think. It says the temp on the thermostat...I'm going from memory here...so....

Also...check the impeller....

I did all of these things to no avail....until i ran the dedicated ground

It's three 12mm nuts to remove the Tstat. It has a rubber gasket so you can remove and replace it without having to scrape and replace a paper gasket.

Chances are that your impeller needs replacement, see the how to guides for replacement info.

Thanks, I replaced the impeller as I was winterizing this year.  It was definately the first time it had been replaced.  I think I will run the wire as suggested if the impeller doesnt fix my problem.

Thanks

It was probably the impeller. Was it missing fins?

Nope, it looked ok actually.  I was surprised, but I only just broke 200 hrs this year and it has I think about 210-215 now.  Either way, it will get a new impeller every two or three years, just to make sure there are no problems.
