Wanted: smooth wake under 20 mph!!!!!
« on: August 05, 2003, 20:02:02 pm »
Love my 99 epic x 22.  bought it at 140 hours and have doubled that in a few months here on Lake Norman, NC.  I feel like I have a 50k boat for around 20k!!!!  :)

Many of the problems I have worked through are addressed on your site and would have saved me much worry and time.  I looked over the ballast postings but the biggest wake is not exactly what I am trying to accomplish right now....

Two questions:

1.  I have 5 kids who want to wakeboard every day (5 thru 14)  I have trouble getting a smooth wake at the slower speeds (under 20 mph)  I was told to go to the four blade stainless O.J. prop and it would help.  true?

2.  Is perfect pass compatable with my year model toyota?  I have friends at the local Mastercraft dealer that said it was and I was considering ordering it this week.  He said he could get me the toyota face plate as well.  I thought I saw somewhere on your site that it was not compadable.

at slower speeds I have had to shorten the rope length to 55-60 ft.(from tower) to keep the younger kids comfortable and out of the foam.  the boat wants to go in and out of plane at the speeds they want to travel.

will post pics.  thank you, scott

Awesome!  You are in great shape.  Forget my other posts you will need them soon enough.  For now you want no weight in the boat.  The X22 is the best boat to learn behind period.  With no weight no ballast you should be able to go around 15-17 and get a nice kicky wake with no chop.  We have only used a four blade, so I can't speak about the 3.
As for the boat going on and off plane, put a couple of your kids up front.  Also, I put 50# sand bags up front under the seats (towards the middle of the boat) even when the kids were learning.  Just wrap them in heavy duty garbage bags and then wrap them in duct tape and just leave them there.  They get wet and then weigh a little more.

We have not had much success with accuski.

And yes 55 is a great length to start!  Let me know how it goes.

I was told by Perfect Pass that they don't make a system for the Epic/Lexus. I think that Accuski could work fine if it interfaced with a paddle wheel speedo, I'm not sure that it does. I have had conflicting answers from the two guys,
Jack and Guy, email me for their emails, or just put @accuski.com after their first names. I don't like posting email addresses because of spambots.

I think that I could design an interface for a paddle wheel speedo, it is on my list of things that I will do when I stop working 70+ hours a week.

I was told by my dealer (sold more Toyotas than anybody else) that each boat cost Toyota 62.5k to build. You got a real bargain!

With a little weight up front, you should get a nice clean wake at about 17 MPH, perfect for learning.

Thanks for the reply.  Just after my posting my friend at mastercraft charlotte told me he couldnt get the perfect pass for toyoya after all.  he said that although it would work he wouldnt recommend acuski because they have seen alot of problems.  were there any toyotas made with perfect pass at all that you are aware of???  If not, hopefully the 4-blade prop will plane me up a bit faster.  When I am wakeboarding I have 300lb in the front and the back full.  maybe if I dump half out of the back I can get a similar result for my kids at slower speeds.  If not I will drain the front sack and the rear and go back to no ballast for the kids.

I have the vdrive and I agree.  It has a hard time planning below 20mph.  With no ballast and minimum gas.  It will plane at 17-18.
Do the direct drive Toyotas have the same problem?  My friends ddrive Malibu seems to plane at any speed.  No bow rise when he accellarates from stop.  My boy rises like crazy, even with ballast under the front seats.

I have the direct drive and have been working on the same problem.  I put on a 4-blade OJ prop and that helped bring the wake to where I can pull them under 20 on 70 feet of rope and they are on a clean wake.  I also have a 350 lb launch pad ballast in the front walk.  I keep it filled to about 250-300 lbs. and the back ballast empty for the kids.
