running temp
« on: June 03, 2006, 18:56:14 pm »
Just wondering what normal temperature should be on the lake.  My 01 SX was about 175 degrees
at around 35 mph.  I also may have a ballast issue I'd like to check out this weekend if I can get on
the water.  It may have drained to the bilge- thanks for the tip on getting the hatches open.  I just
needed to pull harder.  I don't like breaking things.

175 is where mine likes to run. It's so steady it almost seems like the temp guage is broken.

My 2001 normally runs about 165 degrees but after I go for along fast run the temp starts rising quickly. I have to keep the boat moving to keep the temp down. Does anyone else have this problem? If so a solution on how to fix the problem would be great! Thanks!

You mean that once you stop/idle after a fast run your temp just rises until you are moving again?

Sounds like a worn impeller to me.  At idle speeds it probably isn't pumping enough water up through the block to keep you cool.

About $35 and an hour to replace, even faster once you have done it before.

Check the maintenance section, Pete has a great overview there.

Thanks Pete, without you and this site I would be lost sometimes.

I changed my impeller last year about 15 hours ago. It wouldn't wear out that fast would it? I was talking to a pro wake boarder and he said "the only time his boat has ever done the over heating thing, was when they lost the O-ring on the water fillter". So last night I checked to see if I had one, and there is no O-ring to be found on that filter. So I am wondering if all epics don't have a O-ring at the water filter. To me I think there should be a O-ring on the connection between the two pieces.

Assuming you're talking about the clear jar that containes the mesh filter on the raw water intake, then yes, there should be an o-ring. I lost mine one winterization and it would not seal well without it. Leaked all over. I ended up making one by spreading silicone adhesive on the flange of the clear jar, letting it dry, and then spreding some vaseline on the silicone ring. It has worked great for several years!

There is an O-ring on the water pump. Might be worth it to pull the pump and make sure it got replaced when you did the impeller last year.

Yes, check the impeller again to see if it the teeth on there look good...both inside and out and that the oring is there. should look brand new after 15 hours. I'm not sure that a missing oring would actually cause your symtoms unless water is spewing out of the pump, which you would likely notice pretty quickly.

It might help to give us a little background on your boat since it seems you are having several uncommon problems. How long have you had it? Regeular service done? previous owner? etc...

ALso, I've had lots of problems with the temp gauge running hot, so feel the manifold(exhaust) and if you can touch it, it is probably not running too hot, per Capt. Rick. Mine turned out to be the inadequate wiring and running a ground from the battery to the terminal under the dash fixed me right up, Now it runs(reads) 165-175 no matter what. 200 starts the danger zone.

Sorry for your bad luck. let us know how it turns out

A little back ground on my epic 2001 direct drive! I picked it up at the end of July 2005. The boat was amazing except when we test drove it and the impeller was fried. So the dealership changed it and we test drove it the following week, all was good after that for the rest of the year. The boat has 370hours. It was bought from Martin Equipment in Edmonton Alberta Canada, they are to busy to work on it or they don't want to work on it. Either way I probably can't afford $150/hour for a apprentice mechanic to work on it.
Then this year came and I put the boat out for 2 trip every thing ran great except the temp seem to rise once or twice. Then I put contaminated fuel in the boat on the third Trip out and my life began to suck!
The boat was owned by some one in the Edmonton Area.

Thanks for all the Help! I will let you guys know what happens next. ???
