Oil Pressure
« on: June 12, 2006, 18:52:22 pm »
i am kinda new to epics, i have been riding them since 2001, but finally bought my own. i have a 2001 x22 and when i run it under power my oil pressure seems to run almost at the top, but once i shut the throttle down the pressure comes right down. i dont get any alarms and everything seems to run fine. any ideas? also, is the red/green bow light a standard part to any other boat? the cap that fits over part of the light and covers the screws fell off in the lake, so i need a new one of those.

thanks,

joe

You should get the HP oil sender, 0 to 110 lbs.The 80 lb one will give you HIGH pressure alarms all the time. No harm other than that, though. If you get the generic one from Skidim or Overtons, it will be the right one.
I am sure a new sender will fix your high reading gauge. You can also order from Toyota Marine Sports. You can locate the part number in the parts section of the web site.

I am confused. My oil pressure guage has been flopping around a bit so I decided to replace the sending unit. I have been to 3 marine dealers. None of them have ever heard of a 0-110 psi unit. They only carry the 0-80 psi unit. One guy cautioned me about changing the sender since my guage reads 0-80 psi since the calibration will be incorrect (wrong ohms?). I then went to Overton's. They only carry one sender. No specs given but surely it is a 0-80 lb unit if this is "standard". Where are you guys getting the 0-110 unit? Is the TMS unit 80 or 110?

PS: It is nice to see that the TMS unit is competitively priced with those I saw at the retailers but if it is like I have read here (brand doesn't matter) the Overton's unit is $19.99.

Wreck,

Does the gauge "flop around" more after the engine is warmed up?  Mine does the same, but it does make sense, cold oil thick, hot oil runny.  I don't think I would bother with a new sender, you will prob get the same results!  Did you finalize the dates for the Epic round-up??

Last year, the pressure pretty much stayed up around 80 psi regardless. Now the gauge maxes out while turning some rpms but when very slow or at idle it flops around between 20-60 psi and does so randomly. Not a crisis - I just figured I wuold pick one up while at a marine dealer the other day. I didn't realize that it would be so difficult to locate the sender you guys say I need and then to hope it calibrates correctly. I may just let it go for the time being.

I bought a X-22 last year.  I love it.  But, I too have been irratated by the bizare oil pressure issues.  I thought this springs oil change might make a difference (I am running full synthetic).  I thought wrong.  I get occasional beeps when I idle, and the gauge bounces around with no apparent ryme or reason the rest of the time.  Its ok, no temp rise, everything must be ok, I just ignore it.

However, If I can resolve this by changing the sender, sign me up.  BE SPECIFIC, what sender, and where do I get it.  I am no expert epic mariner.

Thanks

Well, I called Atlanta Marine.  The part number 8352067010 is a good number for an oil pressure sender.  He said he could have it drop shipped to me.  I asked him about finding one in Salt Lake.  He said that the part number was not a marine specific number and that a Lexus dealer might have one.  I called the Lexus dealer in town.  Bad part number.  He said he had a sender that he though was the right one for the V8 4.0 but couldn?t guarantee it.  Fair enough.  I thought I would give Marine Products here in Salt Lake a try.  The number was good but he recommended using an aftermarket sender (18-5899) that they have had good luck with.

I am going to give the aftermarket one Marine Products recommends a try.  I will post the results and more specific sender details when I get it.

PS-  I have not been able to find anybody who knows the exact pressure ranges on any of these senders.

Stupid Question- Does the sender have anything to do with the exact oil pressure in the engine or just drives the guage?

Just drives the gauge and sets off alarms.
