miss being an Epic girl...
« on: August 18, 2006, 05:30:36 am »
I know its been awhile and you all know by now I lost my Epic this year. Just wanted to stick my head in and wish the gang well.

I have faith that if anyone's in Austin (or nearby) with a Toyota they'll message me in time to get my board ready. ;-)

p.s. Is that crazy rumor about Toyota making boats for 2007 true? (Sorry for not searching the boards first to find out)

Crazy rumor, huh? Are you starting this rumor on the official home of the Epic? Come on, Chas, spill them beans for us!

Sorry we missed you at the July Lake Travis Epic Round-up, Chasity. We only had one boat there, but it was a helluva time! If there is any water left in the lake, we may try another one sometime in September.

I am sure if there were any Toyota marine plans this would be one of the first places for a hyperactive thread.

The closest thing I know of is Capt Rick's project boat which is Toyota/Lexus powered.  Any updates on that Capt?

OMG, you guys were out on my homelake? Nothin like being a week late and a dollar short... Story of my life! ;-)

Yeah, if you guys haven't heard of the Epic rumor don't let me be the one to start it! A service advisor at one of the local boat dealers said that Toyota may be coming back with the Epic for 2007. You know that they'd put a word out by now if it were true though.

I've *never* been one to start a rumor.

 ;)

just heard that this guy actually SAW one. "Its an '07, new bad ass hull with the same motor", says he...

I wonder if its true or if he's just "misinformed". I'll find out more, just wanted to post this as soon as I heard.

later,

If the Rumor is True- What do yall think will happen to the overall "value" of our boats?  I am pretty excited to just hear about the rumor though... IF it turns out to be TRUE I think TOYOTA made their decision based on THIS SITE.  The fact that the owners of Epics 6 years after they were made are so DIE-HARD in love with their boats prop has a big impact.  But who knows.... Only time will tell.
Boating is more then a passion- is a lifestyle.

If everyone's done having their warm, fuzzy moment...pass it over here before that service writer smokes it all to his head :o         Chasity - STEP AWAY FROM THE WHITE CLOUD!!!

Zero chance IMHO. Didn't they just officially kill Toyota Marine Sports? Absolutely zero chance. He may have seen Chris Anthony's Epic 23 and mistaken the "VOLVO" 8.1L engine for two Lexus 4.0L.

Things are shut down; we're on our own and no amount of cannabis is going to change that.

Anyhoo, let me take a hit and B.S. with you guys for a while: how cool would it be to float the hybrid drivetrain from the GS430H (or whatever they're calling it). Yessir, that'd dump a ton of torque to get up on plane WAY sacked out and still keep our 4GPH.

The sad thing about this is that there shouldn't be any doubt by anyone following the industry that Toyota could damn well dominate whatever market they decided to. Talk about cash-rich and a master of serial production!!!!! Just like the thinking back in the day, ANY large auto manufacturer could probably own the inboard market simply by having access to enough resources to do whatever the hell they wanted to do for as long as they want with comparitively zero defects - IF THEY SAW LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL and knew there would be positive cash flow going forward.

Obviously, TMS knew that they would eventually succeed with their line, and probably knew it would be a couple years, not a dozen years, and no 'maybe's.' Their corporate bosses knew that too. Just look at MC, CC, and BU right now - they're friggin killing it in terms of commanding premium prices and selling buttloads of boats. Proceeds from one X-Star sale (produced by a vastly inferior manufacturer than Toyota) probably far outstrips that from the sale of a dozen Camrys. Think about it.

I haven't yet gotten to sit around the campfire with Captain Rick, but my feeling is that their last approach was really just build an American team and supply them with capital and an advanced aluminum V8. Here are ex-CC, MC, BU guys mixed with auto people and some contract/consultants producing what turned out to be three pretty successful hulls.

Do you realize how far short the effort was from a REAL go at it by corporate? How do you think the scene would be if we brought robots, automated fabric layup machines, REEEEALLY proficient structure designers and industry-leading process controls to this market? Sure TMS used some of that, and was probably heading there, but it surely wasn't their best effort.

Put it this way - within the first five or ten years, ALL OTHER BOATBUILDERS would become NICHE players, because TOYOTA would simply OWN the mainstream. Shit, they could do the same in the vastly bigger runabout market too and make gobs more money on the bigger volume (albeit smaller margin, perhaps).

Heck, while we're wishing upon a star, I'd like to vote for Honda to quit dabbling in business jets and build a line of big turbofans. A good place to start might be with the 737 & A320 replacements...Honda can build some friggin engines. Just ask Danica.

Well while we're wishing I'd like a 450cc racing quad built by Toyota. Bet it'd purr like a kitten.  ;D

I hate to shift gears but I am curious about the current status of Chris Anthony's Epic 23.  I spent about three hours reading threads on other sites on this subject from a couple of years ago.  Wow!  I could not believe the amount of emotion this guy, one advocate, one skeptic, and a bunch of other dudes including our own Toyotafreek generated in the treads.  Is his boat truely inovative or special?  Has he made a few?  What is your opinion Derek?

So I finally got an email back from the guy that claims he saw the new epic. Here's what he said:

"I have seen the new Epic boat. It was in a Wakeboarding magazine but just a silohuette. I also saw it on the Fuel channel in this show called "pull". Its pretty bad ass!"

He seems like he's intelligent enough to at least know if he really saw it or if he saw someone's project. I asked him if it was mentioned whether or not it was going to be a production boat, still waiting to hear back.

We're all gonna want to kick his ass if its BS ;-)

It sounds like the new Epic boats that are coming out. Nothing to do with Toyota, but they have the ads in all the wakeboarding magazines. 23ft Vdrive with something like 4000lbs of stock ballast.

extruop- Yes Chris has made a few boats. There is one on my home lake. It gets a lot of attention, but only because it sits in the cove and blasts the stereo all day. On your typical weekend day they probably only pull for 2 hours. The wake is good, but not great. 4000 lbs. should make a sick wake and it doesn't. Granted our lake is only 6-12 feet deep and that's not deep enough for a wake to truly develop. There is a lot of HYPE on this boat especially on wakeworld. Of course there are good opinions coming from those affiliated with epic boats, but a lot of people who have ridden behind it or spent a good deal of time aboard and are not affiliated with epic have some serious issues with the boat. Some that come off the top of my head- the throttle hits the steering wheel-it has dual rudders and there are some alignment issues, making wakesurfing and wakeboarding wakes undesirable- a trim tab was inoperative-. and i believe someone from inside actually said the stock ballast tanks are all ready "heavily stressed". I don't think any production boat or even preproduction boat should have anything "stressed" and keep moving forward without big changes made. In my opinion after reading numerous posts on wakeworld, that Chris let the cat out of the bag waaayyyyyy too soon. Relying on customer demos to improve the boat instead of hard core in house product testing. If you're building a boat you should know enough people in the business that they can recommend what options the boat should have. Make you product bullet proof and then release it to the public. You don't give potential customers a boat full of problems and just say "oh we are working on that, but what do you think?" People are not going to line up to buy a $60K? boat that they have been on that have issues. If they are I think they are blinded by "bling and 4000lbs. of ballast".

To be quite honest I'm a little irritated that Chris could come up with all these new innovative ideas, to produce the worlds first "wakeboat" and not come up with a new innovative name. Really, how hard would it be to google "epic" and not see Cyclones web site and come up with another name. I also find it ironic that the boat is released the same year that Toyota officially pulls the plug (2006). I have my doubts that this boat will ever truly reach production levels. Toyota at least had a dealer network, real production ready boats, replacement parts, and the administration to make it all work. Even with all that Toyota could not stay above water level. Given I agree with toyotafreak that they could have tried a LOT harder to make it work.

I've worked for Toyota (Gulf States Toyota) for nearly 7 years now, and while I have no official information, my guess it that Toyota's main reasons for pulling out of the boat business were resources and focus. Their worldwide car business was/is growing so fast it takes all they can do to keep up. Also, when your sights are set on building 10 million cars a year, a few hundred boats hardly seems worth the effort. To me, the more interesting question is why they built boats in the first place. My guess is that they wish they could turn the clock back and annull the Epic experiment, but it sure worked out great for us!
