Any new thoughts on the next rig, Bitzy?  We ran our S22 around Chatfield here in Denver for a few hours this morning.  That water is getting cold.  Even with  a full wet suit and my bladder emtpy, still pretty chilly.  Probably getting close to winterizing.
I was laying on the rear deck while my friend was cruising us over to some better water and I couldn't help but notice the smooth purr of that enging.   I still think there isn't a smoother one out there.  My previous boat was a Mooma Kamberra, and one of the reasons Bitzco so easily converted me to epic was the smooth engine.  The chevy 350 in the moomba was so loud you could hear it in the water behind 70' of tow rope, providing an early warning that you were about to begin your set.  With the S22, can't hear it at all, you have to watch the rope tension..  Took a few starts to adjust.
So I'm sticking to my guns, get 'em while they last.  Of course the resale may hurt a little down the road, but are any of planning our retirement around our ski boat?

Insurance guy said the thing could be re-engined and refloated, no problema. Salvage title decreases value by 50% but if you got it cheap and you're gonna use it..  Dang.

Back from a little out o' town trip. To answer a few questions. The ballast tanks were empty. I figure that is part of the reason she didn't sink lower than she is.

I still don't know what to do about a boat. My wife is now a bit skiddish about having a smaller boat and would prefer a bigger one. She likes the Moomba Mobius XLV and its in my price range. I think I would just as soon get another Epic, but I only want an SX in good shape. I'm hunting for one other than the one I already found. I think its a bit much at 35K. Maybe I'll end up going for it anyway. Decisions, decisions. The weather is crap now and the lakes close to home have run out of water, so I may just wait til next spring. If anyone hears of an SX though, let me know.

As for the salvage, Marine Products said there was about 22K damage to the boat which includes their hourly rate. They gave me some prices including an engine for 8K. Seems like a deal for the engine if anyone ever needs one. They said it needs at a minimum: new starter, gps, alternator, 2 batteries, computer, tower lights,  stereo, amp, speakers, various bits of wiring and electronics, upholstery for the transom cover, probably new gauges and a little gelcoat work to the keel which got scraped up on the sand. Also, services on every lubricated part including v-drive and transmission. There is sand everywhere which would have to be flushed, cleaned out, and flushed and cleaned again, Jimmy, the service manager, said he would consider buying it salvage for 4 or 5 grand but not anymore. He said "man that's a lot of work for anybody." Incidentally, he also said this is the first boat he has had come through his shop that was totalled. He was shocked when the engine was frozen. I wonder what that buyer will do with it. Perhaps they'll copy it and make another EOS type poser boat.

I figured as much. Water is neutral buoyancy anyway. There is a coast guard reg that says that boats under 20 ft have enough internal floatation to float while swamped. Ours are too big to have to comply.

I got off the lake ahead of a storm once like that. 10 minutes after I pulled out there were 10ft waves out there. My knucklehead neighbor and his son were out there on a jetski. They made it but said they wouldn't do it again given the choice.

It would be a lot of work to get that boat going again. Easy work. I'd just buy a 4.0 or maybe a 4.7 truck motor out of a late model wreck, talk to our buddies in Oz about a computer and exhaust manifolds, and put it together. You would have to take the boat to parade rest (complete dissasembly) to clean it properly anyway. Epic Vdrives are a MOFO to do engine/trans work, so taking it down all the way is the only way.

I would salvage whatever engine parts I could. I would assume it was running when it went down, so worst case there would probably be internal damage and the exhaust manifolds could be cracked.

I would also assume that the running gear, prop, shaft, strut, rudder is wasted from bouncing around on the bottom. That's a lot of coin plus the fiberglass damage around those parts.

I would pull the Vdrive and trans and hang them in the top half of a 55 gal drum filled with 1/2 paint thinner 1/2 water. All the junk falls off and sinks to the bottom and the paint thinner sits on top.

I can understand that there is a lot of sand in the boat, etc. After 588 hours, dozens of camping trips, etc. there is a lot of sand in my boat. I have cleaned tons of crap, funk and  (beer bottle caps :-\ ) out of the bilge. I pull everything out of it that is not screwed down every year and wipe the bilge down with 409.

ANYway It would be something I would consider if I had the opportunity. It would only be worth it to keep, it would not be worth it for turning a buck.

The Mobius XLV is the baddest boat for the money. The wake is as good as the new Xstar, if not better. Skiers choice is a great company, hows the local dealer? Mine is the same one I bought my Toyota from.

Thanks for the update. Pete, wish i would have taken pictures when I had the tank out. The center backseat comes out in a jiffy. The floor boards then come out next. The panels next to and behind the engine come out. The ski-bar bracket cross members and stuff comes apart, and then you've got the whole drivetrain with nothing but air above it. Pretty darn good access to all sides of the engine in place, but at that point, wouldn't be any harder to get out than a d-drive. I don't look forward to engine alignments, though.

Bitzco - where did you find that low hour SX with 2 1/2 years of warranty?  Sounds similar to my boat when I picked it up.  Marine Products had used my boat as their demo.

Bitzco, sorry to hear about your boat but glad everything is OK with the family and you are going to get some coin to replace it.  For the money those MB Sports are nice but a long haul to a dealer could be trouble, the new Nautique SV211, is a great boat and will run you under 40K all tricked out, but I could never tell you to stray from your Yota roots.  I'm in So Cal and our first dealers will be in San Diego, LA, and Sacramento so I'm no help either for your new boat.

About a salvage situation, you can do it and reapply for HIN as a custom watercraft.  You could end up with a really nice boat for cheap if you know what you are doing, but resell would be difficult.  I'm sure you can save the engine(I'm suprised it siezed, only being under the gulch for a day).  But worse case is a total rebuild of the tranny and engine for about 8k, then its on to elecronics and gel coat repair.  Which you won't know the cost of until you dig into it.  I'd be happy to lend some shop time if you can get it down to San Diego :)

Chriis, thanks for the info, but the boat sold for salveage for cheap. The motor was toast, it proably under power when it went down, as you would want to be under power when trying to maneuver in a storm, especially in an inboard.

A sad fate for such a nice looking boat.  From the pic it looks like it could have just come off the showroom floor.  You just hate to see it sold for parts and the glass scrapped  :'(

If you have not bought anything yet, I saw this on Boattrader today, it's in Georgia somewhere, seems reasonable, low hours, maybe Pete can take a look at it for ya, or maybe he knows the boat!  The best part about the ad is the part that says "OBO"!

Pete,

It may be really something to look into, I wonder I f my wife could understand 2 Epics? I have become emotionally involved with my 21, small, great acceleration and handling, easy for the wife to drive and great looking! But would really enjoy the factory set up on this with the factory tower, ballast tanks, etc, etc!  It looks like the one in the picture is all white.  Is this possible, or is the stripe just up under the cover?  If it is a Epicmarine members boat, that would be great to know!

I think it is red and white, the classic '99 Gravity Games boat. It would have a three tone interior, twe shades of red and white. Red carpet. I can go look for you, no sheot. It's in Canton, I think, about 30 min from me. It would be fun.
