V DRIVE PP ????
« on: April 10, 2005, 17:38:33 pm »
The PP install is nearly complete and im stoked to say that it went very smooth. I just got done drilling the hole for the paddle wheel. Here is the issue. There is a fiberglass pan that runsin the center of the boat from the stern up to the gas tank. This pan sits about 3/4" above the hull where I drilled the hole ( yes, the hole is in the right spot). This pan is about 3/8" thick and does not appear the be structural. Should I install the paddle wheel housing through both holes or should I cut a larger hole in the pan ( the pan is plenty strong and flexs very little when I push on it with all my weight) and mount it only to the hull?
Thanks for the help

I assume you mean the black hull liner. I filled the area between the liner and the hull with 5200 sealant before I installed the paddle wheel. Just blobbed it in there until I filled the gap, at least around the hole. I don't think you want to cut it away and mount directly to the hull, you'd get water in the space between the hull and the liner, probably not good.

Unfortunatly there is already water in the space. Not sure how it got there. Im trying to  suck/blow it out so the area is dry for the sealant. I will go and take some pics now. Any ideas how the water got there. I will deal with how to permentaly keep the water out  after I fill the 2 inch hole in my hull.

I've got another PP issue.  Started the install this morning, it has not gone as smoothly as I've hoped it would have (go figure).

I think I may have hit a major speed bump.  My throttle linkage is different than Pete's.

Here's mine:

I tried to copy a picture of Pete's but I can't cuz it's a pdf, but it's in the PP install in the how to section.  Notice that my throttle connects with a cable, rather than a cylindrical-looking-piece-of-metal like pete's does.

Don't know if cylindrical is a word, but it sounds like it should be.

That pic is too small to see what your linkage looks like, can you post a bigger or zoomed in pic?

Cal, do you have Accuski? If so, they probably rearranged your throttle linkage. Take that cable adapter thingie off, and remove the other Accuski parts. You should be able to loosen the clamps holding the actual throttle cable and pull the entire cable assembly towards the front of the motor. There should be enough length in the throttle cable to allow this.  With the throttle in neutral (straight up), you should be able to move the cable until the threaded end is almost even with the throttle butterfly (where the round brass thing is attached) Then, attach the PP cable and swivel dealie like my pics.

I'll pm you my number, I'm at home tonight and tomorrow if you want to talk real time.

Can't help where it counts, here. But I agree, we should make sure cylindrical's in the dictionary. Also, I have water between my hull ottom and liner, too. I see it ooze up around the depth finder holes. Not sure what's good or bad about that. Glass that's exposed to water for a long period will blister, but nothing even close to structural, and the blistering would remain hidden where the sun don't shine. Not a biggy.

What do you do when a hole saw claims to be 2", but turns out to be 1 7/8"?? And you don't realize it until after the hole is drilled and the thru-hull fitting is covered in sealant? And if there is a god of boat installations, why does he hate me so bad??? My install has gone wrong every step of the way.? I can't even run wires because my battery won't come out.?

Get one of those rubber sanding drums that fits in your drill, Sears sells them. You can open that hole up enough in about 10 min. It's just fiberglass.

I'm not sure I understand why you can't get your battery out.

I'm on the road this week or I'd burn up some of my skymiles and come help you out:) I think you can do this, Cal, just work on one problem at a time.

I'm so glad you guys are struggling through this. I am a mechanical bozo, and need to see your mistakes so I don't make even bigger ones. I can't wait until you have it all figured out so I can pick your brains. Thanks for being the V-drive guinea pigs.

So I decided to just pack the 5200 sealent in the hole and then shove the paddle wheel housing in there. Worked like a charm. I had 5200 comming out every (excatly what I wanted) and should be water tight now. (SORRY ABOUT THIS CAL) Besides the little hole issue everything went smooth. I thought running the wire would be a bitch but in the SX (or at least my SX) some sorta water hose runs from the engine compartment under the starbored side of back seat and up the side and past the dash. I just ran all my wires with that and it was way easy. I have not got it out on the water yet, maybe friday. I'll keep you posted.
I'v got to say I was a bit concerend when I got the hole cut fo rhte paddle wheel. The "How to" photo of this showed the bottom of the boat to be pretty damn thick. Mine was only about 3/8in. After talking to Cal about this we decided that all that GREEN stuff you see sandwitched between the two layers of fiberglass in the "How to" photo is some sort of filler that is not solid between pan and the hull, but is honeycombed (or something). If someone knows anything about this "FILLER" and how it's laid out in there could you let us know?
As for the water in this space. Im a bit concerend because I don't know how it got there. How much is in there. As was mentioned before when water sits on fiberglass it will eventually soak in and blister it. My big (no HUGE) concern with this is what happens in the winter when it freezes, thaws, freezes, thaws, freezes, you get the picture. Im open to any and all ideas on this issue.

But I don't have any SKILLS.? ;)

What bothers me is that I've done nothing wrong -- I just seem to have bad installing karma.? My boat seems to always be a touch different than the others.? What bothers me more is that I'm a bit scared to adjust the throttle cables for fear of not being able to get them working correctly again.? Anyway.? Hopefully Pete can walk me through it all via phone tonight.? Thanks Pete!!

And Terry, thank you for checking in yesterday and for the continued support.
